All Tomorrow's Parties

Posted about 4 years ago
One of three songs sung by Nico on the first Velvet Underground album, "All Tomorrow's Parties" would remain in her live set for much of her solo career -- indeed, although the song is frequently described among Lou Reed's finest compositions, it is difficult to even imagine it being sung by anyone else But Nico. VU + Nico summed up so many feelings of joy, despair, inadequacy and dependency. So much talent, so much genus and so little credit - despite their god like status. This band did and said more than any other band before or after. This is all about the pseudo hedonists leading empty, lonely lives. this song isn't about Fashion Modeling. It's about depraved jet-set living from party to party ("where shall she be, when midnight comes around?"), and self-destructive "swinging" lifestyle ("and die behind the door"). And what costume shall the poor girl wearTo all tomorrow's partiesA hand-me-down dress from who knows whereTo all tomorrow's partiesAnd where will she go and what shall she doWhen midnight comes aroundShe'll turn once more to Sunday's clownAnd cry behind the doorAnd what costume shall the poor girl wearTo all tomorrow's partiesWhy silks and linens of yesterday's gownsTo all tomorrow's partiesAnd what will she do with Thursday's ragsWhen Monday comes aroundShe'll turn once more to Sunday's clownAnd cry behind the door.Nico would take to performing the song a cappella -- not a fate that one normally expects to greet a Velvet Underground song but, on this occasion, a wise one.

  2. zoraxx says i know the version by Siouxsie, that you mention. it is a good one, but i just find Nico's version just because of who she was to come across as the most sincere version , for me.
