what exactly distinguishes a backup vocalist from a featured artist? bryan adams was never credited as a featured artist on belinda carlisle's "whatever it takes" & neither was sawt el atlas on natacha atlas's "amulet." i don't understand.

  1. Worth4Camels says well, the differences can be really fine, if you know what i mean. To me it means that they are contributing more than just harmony in the chorus, but also I believe it's all in the listener's perception when it comes down to it. Sometimes they aren't listed out of record label politics or either of the artists' personal preferences. This isn't new in the recording industry and it's not only with vocals. Prince recorded the synth track on Stevie Nicks' "Stand Back" and isn't listed anywhere in any credits that I've seen showing him as a player.
