I just 'discovered' the Move box set "Movements" in my CD collection during a project to upload all my discs to Ipod... I bought it really cheap at a garage sale without knowing much about the Move other than that after they imploded they spawned E.L.O. I think that's why I never took the time to listen to it, but now I find that it blows the doors off anything i'm familiar with by that group. I'm especially liking disc one that combines their first album and early singles. I'd describe it as a hybrid of aggresively propulsive Mod and really druggy psychedelica. What makes it stand out I think is that there is a disconnect between the beatle-y/66-67/UFO-club musical flourishes and the lyrics... almost all the songs seem to be about people on the edge of losing their minds. Even the love songs are kind of creepy. If I were making a movie about Syd Barrett post-"Piper at the Gates of Dawn", I would seriously consider using some of these tracks on the soundtrack.

  2. dermahrk says Interesting. I love Jeff Lynne and so have obtained a "best of" Move compilation (Great Move!) with most (all?) of his contributions. I also recommend Idle Race, although you'll find that the one double CD, Back to The Story, that covers all of their output, is out of print and expensive. Anyway, I also enjoyed a lot of the non-Lynne Move numbers and this makes me think I should pursue a more complete collection. Thanks.
