Brett Dennen; 9/12/09

So I was at a party at a friend's house the other night, and several musicians happened to be among the guests, and as sometimes happens at a certain hour and after a certain amount of tequila has been consumed, a pick-up band began to form (and the DJ who had been playing, to his credit, hastily unplugged). It started with a superb pianist and a solid drummer. Then another musician stepped up, grabbed a bass, and added his tasteful part. Next thing you know, there's an electric guitar plugging in, then a second. It's all improvisatory, mainly led by the pianist; jazzy (as is almost inevitable in spontaneously created music) but lively and tuneful. After a while the need for a singer began to gnaw, and luckily, a young professional in the field named Brett Dennen stepped forward to oblige the partygoers.

They started with a song I confess not to recognizing, possibly an original of Brett's, followed by howls for an encore. Then it was The Beatles' "Don't Let Me Down" (one of their lesser tracks, in my own view, but hey; it's The Beatles), after which Brett patiently insisted he could perform no more, he had shows to do, he had to save his voice, etc. About ten seconds later they launched into a spirited rendition of "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac, then another couple of songs I wasn't familiar with, after which the pianist began playing Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'".

That chord progression appears in so many rock songs that it took the rest of the musicians a few mistaken passes to realize what they were supposed to be joining in on, but once they did, it was with gusto. This is Brett singing it:

This is the audience reaction:

I wish I'd been there.  Is that L.A. in the background?

Hey now, that's a great use of this here new MOG, Brett's tunes are swimming through my ears on the player, and if I didn't know better probably would have thought this was Paolo Nutini...not a bad stable!! Brett fits nicely between that and/or Jack Johnson-ism so thanks for the intro.
Don't stay away so long Z, we won't hold you accountable for any unredeemed points...
