If you do not watch this video you are crazy and don't know what you missed out on! From the album Boomer's Story Performance on the Old Grey Whistle Test.
i don't know what to say. i watched this for the first time today. Found on that youtube place. It's a song and a performance that pretty much doesn't require anything but awe and amazement at how good music can be.
this is live. hope you don't get hurt on this one. i won't want to admit a thing.

Nice version.who's singing? It's an excellent cover of the James Carr tune!

i been tryin' to find out who all those cats are that sing on this. i hope some one knows. on youtube someone mentioned bobby king singing the part that goes soaring high. thanks for letting us know who wrote it . was wondering as ry does a ton of remake/covers. you are one of the soulmen on here so your knowledge is much appreciated.

I dunno, but it seems like Ry is a real music lover/historian/song catcher and he wants to give props..the auteur (ie the singer must be the writer) music idea is a new one, I think. Doing older songs and doing them well keeps 'em alive. Praise due to Mr. Cooder.
The tune was actually written by Chips Moman and Dan Penn, here's the James Carr version for comparison. I also have versions from Joe Tex,Lee Moses,Dan Penn himself, Tyrone Davis, and Aretha..lemme know if you wanna hear 'em.
James Carr-Dark End Of The Street
I'm gonna research that vid and see if I can find out anything.
Cheers.

Bobby King - Backing Vocals Gene Mumford - Backing Vocals Cliff Givens - Backing Vocals according to a Japanese web site..
Booby King looks like a session cat from LA who also had a duo with Terry Evans.. Gene Mumford came up in Gospel and went on to lead The Larks and was on Cooder's Paradise and Lunch Cliff Givens was in the Ink Spots and also appeared with Cooder on a few records
On the Studio version of Dark End, it looks like Dan Penn joined Ry..
Great website on Ry

I believe I need to get more of those early records..

Of course, Ry burns on his solo. The late (?) Flaco Jiminez is on accordion, couldn't see the drummer, possibly Jim Keltner and I am not sure who was on rhythm guitar, too skinny to be Freddy Fender. Ry has made it clear he strongly dislikes you tube, bootlegs and getting ripped off by the Stones. He has made a good living doing film soundtracks and doesn't perform often in public, but is a master. David Lindley, who I heard in a mostly acoustic duet concert with Ry, has also held forth at length at the karmic evil of ripping off performers.I remain really ambivalent about this issue; but maybe over the long haul, non-commercial use of material by and for music lovers generates revenue. Certainly, most performers have been routinely screwed by the record labels... BerkBob

Agreed on record labels..but fans..If he doesn't like youtube, can't he get videos pulled down? Bootlegs..they can be beaten,too..See Zappa, but there's tons of models for that(again, if someone is selling them,I can see his concern), I don't know the Stones rip off story, so I can't comment on that.
Sure, there's a karmic evil in ripping off performers, but if no money is changing hands, where's the rip off. I mean once you are putting stuff out to the public you do cede a little control.
Did he make dough on Buena Vista Social Club? Are there any karmic issues there?
I would be interested to hear some more of his perspective and yours.

I confess I have sinned and bought some boots for money, mostly by name acts like the Stones or Dylan. Musicians are interested in controlling such as studio outtakes, taped or equivalent live performances and maybe unreleased demos. Some of these are of historical interest. It is expensive and difficult to get clearance, but a wonderful example of an ethically ok release is the Amoeba issue of long-lost Gram Parsons (great sound quality) performance ca. 1967. Ry did the slide guitar on the sound-track to Performance and other studio work for the Stones, but was not credited nor to hear his version, paid.(In all fairness, the Stones business was in the clutches of Alan Klein at the time.) Ry had struggles and delay in making and putting out Buena Vista and I am sure he made sure the veteran Cuban musicians made something. I do not speak for him or David Lindley, but admire them both and when I last heard the latter perform locally, I did not gather he was rolling in dough and think I fairly summarized his comments to the appreciative audience. There are tons of little labels that do re-issues right, bless them..Of course, the internal workings of the music biz meat grinder are appaling..But I still don't see the negative side of youtube or file trading when there's no money involved, especially when we are talking about out of print material..It only serves to keep the artists music alive, while it languishes in the vaults of a major. We've talked about using Blogs as a distributor, and I think that may be the way to go..pay to upload, pay to download and bloggers get rewarded when they upload stuff that gets downloaded. we're talking about trading pennies here..but on a grand scale. At this point it is the services that are hosting the files that are the only ones making money. I'm saying take the money from the rapidshares of the world, let the bloggers spread the word legally, and let the artists get paid. There is so much music out there that is hard to get, and people have shown that they want to hear it, I hope we can find a way to get that done that is fair and respects the artists. But I feel to do this the artists are going to have to let go..or folks are just gonna take everything for free.

BTW..I used to work at Amoeba, back around '99, the SF store.

hey you guys thanks for all the information...twas good schoolin'! as far as the youtube stuff and file sharing i think if the artist doesn't want his videos (ones produced by the artist for the artist) sure ! they should have license to get them pulled. but as far as television where the rights to the performance must surely be picked up by the station, live performances where video cam recording is allowed i.e. outdoor concerts etc. i don't see what the problem is. i never had the chance of seeing one percent of the shows on youtube when i was a kid. the ones i have seen like night music with david sanborn are still not putting dvds out even when we begged for them. sooo people start putting stuff up...must be some kind of control freak at the head of it all trying to decide what we should like next. well... hell no we choose our listening habits and our purchases. none of that prefab computer fixed lip synch gak for moggers i'm sure. so in the end i imagine a place like codyb talks about where you could purchase videos (with better quality than youtube ) singly and make your own compilation. wouldn't that be great? and for everyone. codyb would no doubt rake in big bucks as the administrator of soul.
