Great version of a classic. Some say the best version

Well, it's definitely the best version I've ever heard. I was a teen-ager when the original came out and I must say - as much as it is THE garage band classic, I didn't like it then and don't like it now.

She really nails it.  I've always wondered what her version sounded like.  It's not often that an r&b singer from that generation would tackle a garage band song, so what I imagined as an oddity turns out to be a gem.

KILLER VERSION!!!

Damn! I'm spinnin' it again as I type this...might even have to go for three times.

I agree with the two esteemed gentlemen above; for me the "garage band classic" was always more of an annoying novelty record (possibly because I hate the sound of Farfisa and Vox organs). But in her capable hands, what had been a lightweight ditty becomes an actual song, with dynamics, peaks and valleys, and the priceless punctuation of her hollers and triumphant laughter. I also love how she tosses in a "midnight hour" reference, like Wilson Pickett used to do when vamping near the fadeout of many songs.

Well-posted, sir.

Here a version by The Texas Tornados, don't think it's in the running for best version ever, but I find interesting; done as a concert encore - closer to the original but with a definate Tex/Mex favor;

Love the energy here, but it sounds like the key was an uncomfortable one for ol' Flaco on the accordion – there are parts of that solo that really hurt! Though it's hard to imagine he'd have any trouble with the key of G... Maybe 'cause it's the last number of the night. (sorry, always a critic...)

The guitar soloing is much more successful to my ears.

Yes indeed.  According to allmusic.com, 36 acts have recorded this song.

I'm so partial to the original that I find it very hard to hear as a 'proper' song. The players are too musicianly!

Surely more than 36 acts have covered this! Propbably mnay are too small to be captured by allmusic. And we shouldn't forget The Cramps song 'Human Fly, who cries "96 tears in 96 eyes."
