Well, for starters, check out my post from 4/29 (Otis' birthday) that includes this same performance clip. But then again, I had just started doing my Blues Birthday posts, and they were nowhere near as detailed as they are these days (for better or worse...). So I'm uncertain whether I commented on what _you_ find to be cool about this tune. Could it be...
1. His killer, Marge Simpson-rivaling hairdo?
2. His cool shades?
3. His crazy left-handed guitar playing?
4. That riveting, unaccompanied opening holler?
5. How he substitutes a I# chord (a half-step above the tonic) for the V chord in the turnaround?
6. The frightened-looking white people?
Now I know how to get a response. "How quickly they turn" :-)
But I'm still waiting for something cooler. That's the challenge,
not the knowledge of blues you all have. Kind of a battle of the
bands if you like. There's a similarly cool performance from
Junior Wells at this concert. I think it's a German audience, that
might explain the tranquilized demeanor of the crowd. I'm going
to have to rip the footage myself. I have the video.
Reasons
1. Wrote the music and lyrics, taught himself how to play and sing also,
creating his own tone and style.
2. This was his first recording. The impact was huge.
3. The clothes, the hair, the attitude, all genuine. He's not pretending to
be a blues singer. This is who he was 24/7.
4. I met him and he was cool to us, anyone that's kind to kids is cool.
5. Pure Chicago
And all mocking and condescension is forgiven, "Lord they know not
what they do.........
Finally a chance to see Sister Rosetta Tharpe perform. She's so "there," like a twenty-five-year-old, swinging in total command.
Nary a bad item on this post. Let me pull the envelope back into the box that we were thinking inside of earlier, i.e., Otis Rush. I've convinced myself that I had noticed on my own all of the cool things about Otis Rush's video that mousetrapmedia mentioned above, but I hadn't put them into words. Mousetrapmedia must have felt happy to find another Mogger who likes Otis Rush enough to post the video but who understandably was unaware that it had already been posted. MOG is too massive a juggernaut to keep up with.
Otis Rush recorded a number of minor-key songs for the Cobra label, but his last Cobra single, "All My Love (I Miss Loving)" (1958) had a latin beat as well. It also had Ike Turner and His Band as accompaniment, which was state-of-the-art blues musicianship.
It's hard to think of any other blues records in the fifties or earlier with a latin beat and a minor key, but there is one from 1957, Howlin' Wolf's "Who's Been Talkin'."
Next time I talk to Otis, I'll ask him if Wolf's record inspired him. (I've never met Otis.)
It seems safe to assume that Otis Rush's "All My Love" inspired Peter Green (of Fleetwood Mac) to compose "If I Loved Another Woman" (1968) and "Black Magic Woman" (1969), both minor-key latin beat blues. It also sounds as if Rush influenced Green's and John Mayall's singing style.

kristiana, that's pretty cool. Out o the box thinking too. The rules said nothing bout the blues being required. Genius
