Always loved the way George Clinton would introduce this song in concert. He knew it was a mindfuck.

Didn't know about him or this until now.  I guess my mind was just fucked.  The waltz chord sequence Em-D-Bm-C kept him centered.  The track has true heft.

Wikepedia says that "Hazel grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey because his mother, Grace Cook, wanted her son to grow up in an environment without the pressures of drugs and crime that she felt pervaded New York City....The term, "Maggot Brain," refers both to Hazel's incredible intake of various drugs, as well as a mode of thinking which allows one to rise above the "bullshit" of the world, which is inhabited by maggots who have not yet achieved the status of Maggot Brain."  Imagine what his "intake" would have been had he grown up in NYC rather than Plainfield, NJ.

George Clinton and the boys at the barbershop did take their share of drugs, but it didn't get critical til they all got out to Detroit.
