Not that I imagine anyone out there is watching my playlist with baited breath waiting to see what plays next, but if anyone had, they would have seen that there's a lot of 80's music playing on my iTunes at the moment. And while it's true that I truly consider myself a child of the 80's, this isn't entirely my own doing.

At least not on a song by song basis.

One of the things I like about iTunes is that it collects useful things like how often I've played a song and it lets you create playlists based on that information. For example, I've set up a playlist that, along with some other conditions, only includes songs that have been played less than 9 times.

"Why on earth would anyone do that?!"

Because the idea is that once a song passes the 9 play threshold, it drops off the list. This will happen song by song until, eventually the playlist contains no songs, at which point I'll increase the threshold to 10 plays and we start all over again. When played on "shuffle", this playlist gives me a nice random mix of my music without repeats. (There may be better ways to do that but this is what I came up with).

So far so good, but what does that have to do with all the Eurythmics, Depeche Mode, Split Enz, Kate Bush, etc? Well, I just added a lot of music by those artists recently and since all those new songs started with a play count of zero, they're not dropping off of the playlist the way they normally would. Since iTunes doesn't let you easily set the play count of a song, the new/old stuff will have to "catch up" before my usually eclectic selections return (there are currently 5,404 songs in my iTunes Library!).

In the meantime, I'm quite enjoying the 80's fest!! :)

(It's not all 80's lately, also on "catch up" rotation are Of Montreal, Silversun Pickups and Malajube!!)

Word to that. I have a lot of fun coming up with all kinds of wack ideas for smart playlists. Fun stuff.

OK, I realize it's somewhat lame for a man my age to be engaging in anything that even REMOTELY sounds like a "Duran Duran - a - thon", but I don't question my musical whims, I just follow them! (I should be somewhat more ashamed that not only am I doing this, but I'm telling the whole world about it!)

I recently added a LOT of DD to my collection because I realized that, even though I quite like them, I had next to none of their music on my iPod. This needed correction as there are certain DD songs that, by virtue of everything else that was going on in my life at the time, just bring a smile to my face. This is a good quality in a song that might randomly start playing on your iPod!

Favourite DD song? It'd be a toss up between "Planet Earth" and "Come Undone". Favourite band member? I'm going to have to go with Nick Rhodes!

I'd go with Careless Memories as a favorite live song. For the studio releases? Ugh - depends on the day and mood.
