WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Herdin' stars with Buffalo Bill...

Because I love singin' cowboys, and because it's past my bedtime... I thought I'd share a couple country western lullabies with you.

First, Dean Martin and Rick(y) Nelson singing "My Rifle, My Pony, and Me" from the movie Rio Bravo. Rick and Dean both put out more than one country album. Rick had real knowledge and appreciation for country music, while Dean generally seemed pretty awkward and lame singing that genre. I do, however, love his song "Houston" (probably because it's Lee Hazlewood-produced)... I'll try and upload that song for you in a future post.

Secondly, we have a French-country-western-influenced lullaby... What?! If Dean can do it, so can Lucky Blondo. I was suprised to find this clip of Lucky singing my favorite song of his on YouTube. And, judging by Lucky's expression, he is also surprised to be on YouTube. Here you go:

Last but not least, Gene Autry singing "You Are My Sunshine" (uploaded above). This is the song my mom used to sing to me as a kid when I couldn't sleep.

There are so many great country western lullabies! As I was writing this post, I remembered Roy Rogers' "Round-up in the Sky," Bobbie Gentry's "Hushabye Mountain" and the folk song "All the Pretty Little Horses"- (Alan Lomax's version is a favorite). Maybe I'll continue this theme another night... but for now, I need to get some sleep.

Sweet dreams!

    Great post, Ye-Ye!

One of these days I'd like to do a post about the Farr Brothers, the jazzy guitarist and fiddler Hugh and Karl who were in the Sons of the Pioneers in this video, and whose own early jazzy guitar-fiddle duets are on a par with those of Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli or Eddy Lang & Joe Venuti.
