WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Let's Get Nautical

Posted 7 months ago

The weather is finally improving and I have been looking forward to getting out on the water. So, with that in mind, I thought I'd share some seaworthy images.

There's something inherently romantic about a song sung on a boat. Case in point: Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly in High Society. Grace is lucky-- Bing's a charming guy and he's singing my favorite Cole Porter song, too.

"True Love" is a song thats been covered a lot, but I think the Everly Brothers did it best. (Uploaded above)

Now, back to the boat. Here's a clip of Margarita Carmen Cansino AKA Rita Hayworth in The Lady from Shanghai. As an actress, I find her story to be one of the most intriguing of "old Hollywood." But anyway, this post is about music. She's not actually singing here- MGM Studios would hire the same woman to do the vocals for Rita on most of her films. Not that it matters- it's a lovely image. (Although I don't think I'd like to be on THIS particular yacht...)

Lastly, we have Groucho. Is it weird that I have a crush on all of the Marx Brothers? Probably. In this clip, Groucho is singing "Everyone Says I Love You" to his paramour on a canoe. This song is from the movie Horse Feathers. But whoever uploaded this cut off the best part-- when Groucho chucks his guitar into the water at the end of the song. Perfect.

Happy sailing... and don't forget to pack your ukulele and parasol!

Way cool post, ye-ye!  Some random musings:  The Everly Bros. verson (1961?) is way better than Elvis's 1957 version, one of his earliest nadirs.  In the first video, I like the shot from above, from Bing's point of view but more distant.  At first I thought maybe because the music was playback, that even the ocean was rear-projected, but that wouldn't make sense because they'd have to haul a sailboat into the sound stage, but on the other hand that would be easy if it was on a trailer.  (You can tell I'm a real romantic.)  If the second video weren't a guy thing, then we'd have a close-up of Orson singing with a cigarette.  It looks like Groucho was really singing and fretting in sync sound, which shows what a versatile vaudevillian he had to be before his film career.  At first the duck seemed a little too well trained as a prop to be actually alive, but then she shakes her head.  Great art is mysterious.

    Thanks Spike!!
I too prefer the Everly Brothers version over Elvis'- their close harmony makes the song seem more wistful and melancholy.
Wow, yeah, to have Orson singing instead of Rita would be a trip-  he just doesn't strike me as the "song-and-dance" kind of a guy.

You, a woman, have heard Elvis's version?  You get extra brownie points!

What a great post! Maybe best themed post on Mog. I've always wanted a 70foot yacht under my feet, so these videos seduce me easily. Though yeah...being on the yacht in 'Lady From Shanghai' would go staright to the top of Horrible Holidays! Though after hearing that song, he can't say he wasn't warned.
