Have you ever wondered what Pete Best is up to? I haven't.

Well folks, he appears to be playing at our local casino. Yes, I sometimes check out the entertainment rosters at these geriatric amusement parks. Don’t laugh. Bo Diddley played there! More recently, Tommy James and the Shondells… and Petula Clark. OK, they don’t compare to Bo. But still… Could a show at a casino be mildly entertaining? Fun, even? I wonder.

Maybe my Nana will go with me.

Maybe I'm way too cynical, but the first three words that occurred to me when I read this were "amusing car crash."

Yeah Ivylander- Pete Best at a casino sounds like a total trainwreck. I came pretty close to seeing Tommy James but ultimately was too frightened that the show would leave me feeling really depressed. Crimson + Clover + Casino= too risky.

I've always loved Cab's music, but to watch him in action is such a treat- he was a truly magnetic and unprecidented performer. The live action segment of this 1932 Betty Boop feature is the earliest known footage of Cab Calloway. It is one of 3 cartoon shorts which feature Cab and his orchestra.

Observations: The drummer is pretty tricky with his sticks. Cab is pretty tricky with his feet. It's nice to see Cab wearing something other than his trademark white tuxedo. And yes, the song is laden with drug references. Enjoy!

This is a classic. Not only did the Fleisher Brothers have great taste in jazz, but the early sound Betty Boop cartoons are in many ways the pinnacle of animation.

Oh I know- Betty Boop cartoons pre-censorship were the best. The animation and soundtracks are remarkable.

From 1940-1946, short music videos called "Soundies" were available for viewing at bars, restaurants and nightclubs across the country. Soundies were basically film juke-boxes that showed music video clips-- you put a dime in a movie projector and it played the performance of your choice.

In 1947, manufacturing of the Panoram (the projection machine that played Soundies) ceased, due to wartime production shortages. The stop of production is what ultimately lead to the medium's demise.

Kay Starr, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway were a few of the artists featured in Soundies.

A fun one from Martha Tilton:

And my personal fav- (stick this one out until the end):

OMG. That last one does not follow standard form. She didn't yodel any secret shipping schedules, so I guess our ship went down because he imaged a stripper.

ye-ye girl, you made my day.

Yeah, where'd the stripper come from? She's obviously not the girl waiting at home. Kind of a dark ending for a song full of yodel-odle-odling.

I really liked that Martha Tilton video. Great song. I think the "patients" were hired for their dancing, not acting abilities, though.

These are all just staggeringly wonderful. It's especially nice to get the Cab Calloway song without the static, lifeless lead-in-to-the-musical-number that too often mars the "race movies" of that period.
