HELLO, MY NAME IS:

Posted about 4 years ago
Hi! Let me start off with a few confessions so we can get off on the wrong foot. I can't appreciate Bob Dylan. I've tried it before and it just doesn't work, and I can't understand what he did to deserve his near-legendary status. I do, however, have a somewhat embarrassing fondness for the Gorillaz. I've also never been to a concert, which most people find inexcusable, but I really don't think this one is so bad since it's getting harder to find bands that are worthy/alive. It's actually not either/or, it has to meet both standards. I have one Britney Spears song somewhere on my hard drive because I was tricked into accepting it as an AIM file transfer and I haven't gotten around to deleting it because if it's even possible that super-trashy music can hold sentimental value, this song does.

  1. chucky says I've never gotten Dylan either but I think I'm going to give him another go round. All that hype must mean something. And, I have a Fall Out Boy track on my harddrive. There I confessed right back. :)

  2. david hyman says ya know what. i saw dylan open up for the grateful dead live about 10 times, heard him a thousand times and never got it. that is, until about two years ago. then, i heard nashville skyline. the head was right, the sun was right, the stereo system was right. i became totaly obsessed and read 7 dylan books in a row. i now worship the dude.

  3. Lirpa says This is why I like your post: 1) you have unabashed honesty 2) your ability to figure how you feel about an artist, hot or cold 3) how you are willing to admit that even you are subjected to liking some questionable music (who isn't?) And I've just never gotten it, but what do people have against FOB? I have some of their stuff, but never really listened to it, mainly because I didn't like it, but why use that as the end all be all to embarassment in music?

  4. x138 says It's definitely true that FOB doesn't quite epitomize musical embarassment, but it was just what popped into my head at the moment. I actually find them more bearable than a lot of other bands - the Black-Eyed Peas come to mind, if only because I almost had to listen to "My Humps" on the radio the other day, and even just seeing the title of that song is making my blood pressure rise. So really. I guess it could be worse than FOB. Let's try again. At least I don't like Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, Hilary Duff, and there are so many more, but my MOG isn't going to tolerate this much bad music.

  8. eshep says dylan is definitely an acquired taste. i didn't really appreciate him fully until i was in my late 20s. and, like david, i found myself falling hard, reading tons of books, watching movies about him, etc. i read somewhere this weekend (nytimes? boston globe?) a quote which i thought was pretty neat about bob dylan. it said that the greatest artistic achievement of robert zimmerman is bob dylan. i don't like fall out boy i played a show (sxsw) with the dandy warols several years ago (it was a sesac showcase). after we set up our merchandise table (how we afforded to eat), they forced us to dismatle it so that they could set up their lights, bubbles, and movie projector in its place. then they forced themselves into the best time slot. it is true what they say about nice guys finishing last, and it is also true what they say about persistance. and this is also why i can't appreciate the dandy warhols.

  10. ladyfizzgig says Meh, it was all good until you started bashing FOB. Not that I'm a huge fan but whatever, I like 'em fine. Welcome anyway.

  11. SamTheButcher says Dylan's always been kinda "meh" for me to. Not "until", just never got him completely. I can love a Dylan song, but it's gotta be right place, right time. FOB - I don't hate 'em, but I'm a sucker for a sugary pop hook, and the hard sugary pop hooks get me even more. It started with "Sugar, We're Goin' Down" - just a really good hook. And something about the way he sings is intriguing. Pete Wentz seems to be an attention-wanter, but I dunno why that bugs me with some artists and not with others, ya know?
