Artists You Should Know About

I couldn't settle on 10, so I choose 11! I feel bad for being late, but eh, better late than never, amirite? Let the music snobbery and geekiness begin!
11.) Destroyer - Rubies When Destroyer opened for Mates of State in March, I remember making fun of them lots with my concert buddy, "Mah-hah, the only things they're destroying are our ears!". But everyone insisted that I NEEDED to hear their album, that they (he?) actually are (is?) really good. So I did, and I really did like it. Probably the first time I've given a band a second chance after what I consider to be a horrible concert performance.
10.) Anathallo - Floating World A beautiful, inspiring, and marvelous album that we all knew they would release. It ALMOST lives up to their live show (Let's face it though, their live show is just unlive-upable). Anyone that calls them Sufjy rip-offs is just retarded (I'm looking at you, Pitchfork).
9.) The Rapture - Pieces of People We Love As Pitchfork continues in its tradition of turning a cold shoulder to bands that they previously fawned endlessly over, I continue my tradition of loving follow-up albums by bands that are terribly unloved because people don't like them as well as the previous ones. "People don't dance no more/They just stand here like this", have truer words ever been spoken?
8.) Danielson - Ships Scene: A frizzy-haired girl wanders the aisles of a Tower Records on a weekday night. As she approaches the listening table, she sees that an album called Ships by some band she's only heard of a few times is one of the options. She decides to give it a listen and sits on one of the available stools as she puts the headphones on. Thirty minutes later, she realizes that she's absolutely fallen in love with this album.
7.) Delays - Valentine I'm really not sure whether this album should be on the list, seeing as it's not released in the US yet and probably won't be for awhile if things keep going the way they are. Still an absolutely fantastic album though, even if Greg seems to be getting more androgynous with each album...
6.) hellogoodbye - ZombiesVampires
I can not even begin to tell you how long I've been waiting for this album. And while it isn't perfect (and a little bit repetitive), it still beat all expectations.
5.) Goldfrapp - Supernature A little bit upsetting that my love affair with Alison Goldfrapp had to begin with this album. I feel awful for waiting so long to get an album of theirs. The knockout beginning trio of "Ooh La La", "Lovely 2 C U" (how very Sonic Youff of them), and "Ride a White Horse" is the perfect way to start the album and it only gets better from there. Hopefully Goldfrapp will become more popular since their music is busy being the soundtrack to Target commercials.
4.) Mates of State - Bring it Back "You will surely find this/Pleasing to your ears". Oh yes, I definitely did. Score one for the happily married couples!
3.) Field Music - Field Music I feel really bad for mistaking the lead singer for a roadie when they opened for the Futureheads, especially after hearing their album and realizing that they're ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! I'm glad I got the CD with the bonus tracks, because "You're Not Supposed To" is probably one of the best songs ever
2.) The Decemberists - Crane Wife The Decemberists prove that a major label isn't going to change them. The Crane Wife is probably their best release and the second track (You think I'm actually going to type it all out? YEA RIGHT) is probably the best thing they've ever recorded, although I'm unable to follow the story very well...
AND
NUMBER 1
(NO SURPRISE REALLY TO ANYONE WHO KNOWS ME)
IS
1.) The Futureheads - News & Tributes My breath was baited for MONTHS leading up to this album. I hastily gobbled up the Area EP(s) and impatiently waited for the full-length. And it was everything I'd ever hoped for, I don't care what those silly music critics say. They're all Ghostface Killah-loving bastards anyway. If "Favours for Favours" isn't their best song, I'm not sure what is.
I totally forgot my Top Albums of 2006 list.
Pretty dumb, I know. Well, I suppose I'll try and write one tomorrow.

I wouldn't be so upset except that I've been mentally compiling my list all year
Perhaps it really is hip to be square...
How else could a band that has the lyrics: "Its contents watched by Sycorax/ And patagon in paralax" be one of the newest hip bands among high schoolers who enjoy My Chemical Romance and Coldplay?
Now, I always promised that I'd never be one of those people, that always get upset when they're favourite bands get popular ("sell-out") so please know that I'm not accusing Decemberists of selling out and I'm not upset that they're getting recognition for their fabulous music, I just don't understand it.
By all reasoning, the Decemberists are one of the nerdiest bands out there, most of their songs sound like they should take place before the 20th century; sea shanties and folk-type songs mostly. In any case, suffice it to say that I was quite the surprised one to see gaggles of little high schoolers at their latest concert. Not that I have a problem with high schoolers going to the concerts I go to, it's just surprising to me that people who love bands like Fall Out Boy would like the Decemberists.
...Has the OC started playing the Decemberists?
Comments
haha.
you musn't stereotype all us high schoolers. some of us acutally have pretty decent tastes in music.
and no. i don't believe i've ever heard the decemberists on the oc.
but i think we're just tired of the same old music being played over and over and over again. we want to hear music that's different. something that's refreshing. and i think the decemberists are just that.
I agree with you, bohemianlullaby. I'm not a teen but some teens do have taste. What I'd really love to see is teens with taste taking on the TRL crowd. It must be frustrating as hell to go to school with kids who don't know what music is outside of Fall Out Boy.
See, I have no problem with teens liking the music I like, I know high schoolers that have FANTASTIC tastes in music. I'm also not opposed to people branching out and finding different artists, which I hope most people who inevitably do, I just find it odd when teenagers that otherwise listen to bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, and Linkin Park start listening to bands like the Decemberists.

Good call, I always through in a little Mazzy Star late at night.
The Rapture is fantastic. I am going to see them tonight myself. Also, if you like Danielson you should check out a cover of "Who are Parents" by the Danielson Family.
