MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Artist:
(25)

So a couple of weeks ago a band that I like a lot came through town again. Lucero. Seen them three times in the last two years. And while they are an accomplished band that has worked very hard I have a hard time labeling them.

When they started it was traditional, old school, country. Then it became a bit more electric. And I was trying to describe them the other day because they went through the alt-country thing and now it is almost southern rock with a hard/punk slant.

But I digress. I was at the show and it was fun. But not as fun because my friend that originally exposed me to them wasn't there. So there was a bit of missed nostalgia. Anyway I saw another friend walk in and I asked if he was here for the show. "Yes. Good old American rock 'n' roll".

Hmm. Sometimes the tag thing really bothers me. Why can't bands be rock 'n' roll, or metal or jazz, or blues or punk or country or bing bad or whatever else? Why does it have to be: alt-country post-punk emo hardcore goth and on and on.

I can understand to an extent but now it seems harder and harder to describe a band in one sentence.

Well here they are. No glory and a paragraph full of descriptions.

They are putting some kind of high register drone into my ear, which, in its annoyancy, is the most compelling thing I hear as I hear them out. That "rough 'n' ragged" vocal strikes me as either too affected or not affected enough.

A unique and persuasive vocal approach is the make 'em or break 'em round here.
