Rain, lightning , rainbows, and the Shins

I traveled up to Bend Oregon...or maybe I traveled down...hmm, but anyways my boyfriend and I traveled there to see the lovely Shins. My boyfriend is more into metal music, not like slayer, but Chiodos and Coheed...a step down from hardcore metal, so he wasn't too hot on seeing the shins unlike me who was bouncing in my seat all the way there.
When we got there is was the skies were gray and it was warm out. It was an outside concert, so rain or shine. And of course it poured on us and there was lightning and thunder, but that didn't matter to me! I was just happy to be there. My boyfriend on the other hand was asking to leave every 5 minutes.
It stopped raining and there were double rainbows before Arthur and Yu played and then as the Shins started to get set-up it looked like it was going to just pour again, but then the Shins came out and magically the clouds seemed to had shifted and the sun came out.
At that moment I knew the Shins were not just musicians, but magicians. They made the rain go away, and it was awesommme.

The Funeral...Band of Horses

I havent listened to this song in a while. It reminds me of last summer, when I didnt have to work, and all I would do was balance on railroad tracks while hanging out with friends and talking about nothing...
How I miss it. Jobs suck.

Here is the railroad bridge I spent my days walking across. I should go back soon.

Hurrah for mothers!

When I was growing up I remember car rides with my dad. He would either be playing jazz in his car or have some classic rock station on. I would be sitting in the back seat and a song would come on and I would instantly know the tune of the song, but not the words. My dad would hear me humming and turn around and go, "how do you know this song?" To tell you the truth I have no idea, it's like some of the old classics were programed in my head at birth.
I once talked to my mom about it, and she told me that she always listened to The beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Neil Young, Led, The Who, Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkle...the classics, when I was in her womb. Mystery solved. I didn't actually think that kind of thing worked...but I know whenever I have a child I'm going to do the same thing.

This is one of my favorite songs. Enjoy.

the wait

I've been listening to Sea Wolf now for over a year maybe longer, and I just remember the first time hearing them. It was an experience none the less. Middle Distance Runner was one of my favorite songs and I would sit in front of their myspace page and play all their music over and over and over again.
I have a funny feeling that Alex church is going to go big with Sea Wolf. Almost everyday after school I would go onto the page and see if he had new songs. One day he had and I was way excitied, the new song was amazing but I can't remember the name now, I just remember listening to the lyrics and painting a picture in my head of the moon hitting the snow on top of a mountain while a man and a woman lay side my side holding hands freezing. And leaves rustly in the wing? His lyrics are very visually pleasing.
They came to Portland a few weeks ago, I didnt go do to my poorness, but my bro did and got me the EP and I listened to it over and over...
I cant wait for the CD in September, and as much as I would like for them to be a secret, I wish the best of luck to Alex and the rest of the band.

Horray

There is a time in many peoples lives where they realize they have been listening to the same music over and over and need to find something new.
That was me this past month, but I've been so busy I never got the chance to look for new stuff, til now.

I just got back from LA and it was pretty sweet. My boyfriend and I went to Sunset strip and hollywood blvd, and went to the huge Guitar center, and also to Amoeba Music. Amoeba was amazing. They had a lot more cd's flowing in so you could find just what you wanted for cheappp.

I got Summer in Abaddon by Pinback, and Oh No! Oh My! by OH No!OH MY! I like very much yess.
But I was really pleased because after going to the same cd stores gets kinda old, and walking into a new one with tons of your favvv music is like walking into a giant candy store.

The Helio Sequence

The Helio Sequence. A brilliant band from Portland. If you havent listened to them yet, I would give them an ear so you can see what magic is like.
I saw them live the other night at a local college for free. I felt pretty cool cause I was going to a college partyish thing, but I also felt cool cause I was going to be in the presence of some music gods. Ben Weikel, who was the drummer for Modest Mouse when they did Good News, goes absolutely crazy when he plays...the faces he makes were priceless.
Then Brandon Summers has an smooth voice and is a very talented guitarist. All and all the two men make up a chemical called The Helio Sequence, which produces electronic like beats that are catchy and make you want to dance.
So if you looking for some new tunes and a great band, check out the Helio Sequence and you will feel magic like no other.

Modest Mousey

Oh Boyy!
I saw my first Modest Mouse concert last night, and it was amazing...better than a deep fried snickers bar. Isaac Brock is an great performer, I got goosebumps because of the way he sang and got into it. Woow wo wooow oww, it was great. They started off with The Ocean Breathes Salty and Black Cadillacs...After waiting in line and through the first band (loveless laughter..Good.) for 4 hours, it was well worth it. They played a couple of new songs, and kept it pretty shuffled about what songs they played from different albums. But then. At every concert there seems to be some people who just like to ruin it for evvvverrrryone. I was in the second row and jumping up and down having a good time, when a bunch of 40 year old drunk people pushed their way to the front and just went crazy and pushed everyone. It was like drowning in a giant sea of drunk people....I ended up towards the back and ended up missing a good part of the show.
Ah, any ways, no big deal, but it kinda was,...But Modest Mouse is great live and I would go again even if it means fighting my way...I'll have to start lifting weights or something.

All we are sayingggg...

After watching the movie "The U.S. vs. John Lennon", I realized how crazy our government was...and still is..
I just dont understand how cops and "the man" could look at the peacenicks and go "Wow, they are a threat to the US! We better bring them down" So they attack the people minding their own business and singing All you need is love, and Give peace a chance and injure many of them for no reason. It's ridonkulus. They were just speaking their minds and it is a free country sooo I dont see the problem. John's songs really had an affect on the people and I think that's one of the best things about that time. That artist could sing about the government and how wrong the war was and people could relate so well. I think thats how our country grew together, through music. Course I didnt live back then, but I kinda wish I did, just to see how it really was.

I was introduced to Pinback a while ago and I love their stuff. It's very mellow but they create this great beat, thats very hypnotizing. The lyrics are great, in the song Penelope, there is a part that is just very soothing and the lyrics go like this...

"Take you to the forest
Let you feel the raindrops falling down
Seeping through your redscales
Eliminate the faucet
Eliminate the need for water
Replace it with a safe shelf"
Very cooool.

Here's there video for Fortress, one of their newer songs I believe.

Also, the band Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, or SSLYBY, just puts a smile to my face. Heck, the name alone makes me giggle. They have some pretty catchy tunes, which is good and bad...but overall I think they are great. Here's more background if your interested...http://www.columbiatribune.com/2006/Aug/20060831Go!016.asp

Here's there video for Oregon Girl- Checkkkk it

Their song "House Fire" is another one of my favorites.

Dont be Modesttt

I just got word that Modest Mouse is kicking off their tour early. Woooooo! They're coming to P-town March 14th, and I'm way stoked. I've dreamed of what it would be like to see them in concert, for I've only know about them for a few years now and they havent been on tour recently, or maybe they have..eh I dont know...Anywhoozers, I'm thinking its going to be an epic experience and hopefully they play a lot of their oldies.
March seems to be a time when lots of new music comes out and bands start to blossom. Horray for early springs and global warming! Speaking of global warming I'm watching "An Inconvient Truth" in my Ecology class. It's interesting, but its also kinda woohaish. It's just weird to think that the thing that supplies us with goods and made us the place we are today is falling apart, but I think they've been saying that for years. Its hard to believe anything these days...I just cant believe the movie won something in the oscars. Hmmm. If the Earth does start to crumble and everything is a bajillion degrees, at least we'll still have music. yay.

It's one of those days where it feels like I've listened to my ipod so much that I'm bored of all the music on it. So in order to fix this problem I've decided to search for new music, and thanks to mog, I'll have no trouble feeding my inner emptyness for new music. Yay for Mogggg, and bands I have yet to discover.

Wow, um so Sub Pop delieverd the Shins album early to me, and I really cant complain.
I kinda stopped breathing when I was opening the package, cause yea I was wayyyyy excitied.
Anywho! I listened to it, and I loved every second of it. Pure amazment. Jame's lyrics are so fairytale like and it sended me into a trance just like the other albums. Some of the songs sounded somewhat similar, but its not too bad. It's very happy feel goody and poppy sounding, really original. After listening to it, it felt like all was well in the world cause there are little birds that chirp and wow. Definatly worth the wait.
If your thinking about buying it, buy it. Its worth it.

So my 17th Birthday was last Monday..(woowhoo I can see rated R movies!) but yea, my parents didnt know what to get me so they just gave me money, very sweet of them. Anywhooo I have a list of cds I'm thinking about getting and I need to know if they are worth it or if I should skip em. Here is what I'm thinking...

The Helio Sequence - Love and Distance

Beirut- The Gulag Orkestar...I fell in love with this music over a matter of minutes.

Wolf Parade- Apologies to the Queen Mary

Radiohead- The Bends, my friend quotes "The most amazing peice of art in the last century"

And I also wrote down on my list socks..cause Im running low, they seem to disappear.
But yea, Thats what I'm thinking...and The Shins album is coming on Tuesday so YAY.

just an idea

After watching the homemade music videos that came with Beck's new album Information (its good, and it comes with sick stickers..who doesnt like stickers?) I've decided that I want to produce music videos for bands. Or I want to be an archeologist..but you know dreams are dreams. I just think It would be absolutely cool to listen to a song and then make a short movie of what you think is happening in the song...or just doing something random.
One of my favorite video's of all time is the Modest Mouse music vid for The Ocean Breaths Salty.
