MOG Strike and Mixed Feelings

Posted almost 4 years ago
.
..First here's a cut from an artist I discovered from a MOG post a few weeks ago; http://mog.com/SUGAR_BLUE/blog_post/160864.Sugar Blue (still not sure if the post was by the artist or a fan). Well, the post inspired me to get some of my own Sugar Blue. Got this disc in the mail today and have listened to it twice so far. Great stuff! .One of many discoveries the MOG has brought to me that make me realize how much I've enjoyed this site. The MOG is really wonderful (and as some others have said, addicting)! .However, some issues with the site, gaseous pains, etc, have been frustrating and have made me a bit post shy of late. Today I discovered several of my trusted have joined a MOG Strike. Seems to me this sort of puts an official face on what has been many people’s, including mine, maybe subconscious reaction to recent stability problems. So, maybe I was already a bit on Strike. .That said, my experience with strikes, and I've been involved with a few, is they usually involve a fair amount of collateral damage. (And getting into semantic for a second, isn't this more of a boycott than a strike - who is labor and who management; isn't this more producer and consumer. Anyway…). .I agree with the fact that it is important that MOG set stability as a priority for the soon to come upgrades. This site is wonderful as it is; if it just worked right most of the time. Adding new features on top of an already unstable system just seems like asking for trouble. “A sound foundation is essential to all good construction.” So, I respect others saying “STABILITY ASAP”, even in a form I think maybe a bit counterproductive. I really do think the boys (and girls?) are working hard at it and frankly have been more upfront about issues than any other site I can think of, but worry that being typical geeks they maybe more excited to adding new features than building a sound framework. So….So, my feeling and reaction to this MOG Strike are mixed, the message is good, but not so sure it isn’t already understood… I guess, it’s a good thing I was already feeling personally reluctant to post lately. ..So, how far does this strike go? Am I OK if, after this post, I do what I’ve already been doing for a few weeks, not posting but continuing to read, listen and comment occasionally? Or am I going to be a scab (see this is getting messy already) if I continue to do even that? Not posting ain’t that bad, but not visiting could be really tough….RED BUTTONS = GoodYELLOW = Won’t Listen To

  3. brand X says I'm with you on the semantics, waydutch. I could go for boycott, protest, or demonstration, you know, words like that, but I just can't really hang with strike. It seems to kind of belittle the sacrifices made and hardships endured when a group of people actually go on strike. In any case, I am sure both sides, however they are divvied up, really want to see the same things happen, so the whole thing should remain relatively bloodless.

  4. david hyman says here's the deal most people don't understand about the old sexy mp3 player. it's a big ass file size. when there are 10 of them on a page, it really slows down the page load time. that's the last thing anyone wants. people complained they couldn't see how far into the song they were with the red button, so we spent weeks building that little timer in there. the reality is, we're moving to a much deeper place soon. y'all shall see.

  7. asrati says Is keeping MOG running smoothly rocket science? I would think that if MOG had programmers combing the site daily, *using the site in the ways a typical user might choose to use it*, that the bugs would be popping up, and being remedied, within a week - not several months.

  8. dermahrk says I like this tune, and this artist (new to me!). Regarding the strike, not for me. I'm still grateful it exists (though I sometimes scream and swear at it).

  9. waydutch says David - You're welcome and thank you for the comments and willingness to discuss things. The love you all put into this is much appreciated. . I'm not sure I understand your comment about using the old sexy mp3 players, I love 'em - the ability to rewind and forward to and having time points is a giant plus in my book. And I wonder how those files are bigger when their code is just a partial portion of a buttons embed code? and when things are running well pages with them still seem to load well. However, if they cause issues/conflicts I don't mean to be making things harder. So, if they're an issue let me know. I can live with just buttons as long as red ones remain an option. RGM - I agree it's a great site and growing pains are natural and should be expected. X - Yes this is poor use of the word strike and while unintended is a bit disrespectful to those who've put their livelyhood on the line for something WTC- Yeap, the old between a rock and a hard spot. I understand people's frustration and agree stability should be a major proirty in the application of MOG's new resources. However, I'm not really not convinced that isn't understood by all already or that this strike is a productive way to the make the point. Asrati - I'm not sure how much rocket science it is or isn't. I know there's some amazing sites, say e-bay, that seem more complex and run much smoother but then one has to consider the economics of the situation. MOG doesn't has the resources or manpower sites like that do. Perhaps the recent influx of capital and some development time will lead to this wonderful deeper space David hints at. and YES, monitoring the site as a typical user would be a worthwhile, even nessicary part of a good quaility controll system. Mark - Yeah, this has been a great discovery for me. Did you follow the link to the post that original caught my interest? It has quite a write up on the artist.
