Sunday Under the Covers – A totally rocked up cover of perhaps one of the previously most annoying songs of all time.

Posted almost 4 years ago
“Brand New Key”.Arrgh… don’t let knowing the original scare you away just yet! (and things don't really kick-in till after about the 30sec. mark). My newest favorite new band the Dollyrots really rock up a song that has always annoyed me horribly. All about wanting some guy to fit his brand new key into her brand new roller skates or some such metaphor. .Singer Kelly Ogden still does the same, I don’t know what you call it, annoying nasal vocal whine, especially in the choruses, that was always a big part of what made the original so painful, but guess it just wouldn’t be the same without it. That aside, this is brilliant!!!.....don't go too fast, but I go pretty far.

  1. hesiod says yeah, this is a good cover not what you expect from the beginning the dollyrots gonna have to remember that name

  2. Wahiawa786 says I remember Melanie Safka's original back then, and I thought it was...puerile. (Mad magazine's favorite word for age-inappropriate stuff.) I wonder if Shonen Knife could carve "Brand New Key" into something as interesting as their giddy cover of the Carpenters' "Top of the World"?

  3. deadmandeadman says I almost didn't play this track. You're correct, the title brings back too many treacly memories.

  4. dermahrk says Love it. Starting with a verse close in treatment to the original is a bit dangerous. Glad you told me to wait 30 seconds.

  5. nailosity says Nice! Call me silly, but I have a little "soft" spot for this song, as it was on the radio when I was like 10 years old (well, maybe 11. What year was the original?) Thanx for posting - !

  7. nailosity says That's about right right - I was 11. After the Beatles broke up, well? We looked to the radio for some semblance of Pop....something.

Dig this rocking version. Love the Dollyrots! Have to state that although I'm in the minority here...I also liked the original. Apparently a lot of people did too when Melanie released it...as it was a number one record on the charts.
