Quite awhile back I posted about this bands first album, "Raging Full On" - http://mog.com/waydutch/blog_post/116075 . .fIREHOSE consisted of Mike Watt and George Hurley from the Minutemen who following lead man D. Boon's tragic death were devastated and intending to give up on music. An unexpected knock on the door motivated Watt to continue. A 22 year old Ohio native and devout Minutemen fan, Ed Crawford (Ed fROMOHIO as he would be known), found Watt's address in the phone book and successfully pleaded with him to continue. The result was fIREHOSE. Their second album, "if'n" is how I got acquainted with this band. .
Released in 87 on SST. Another one of those discoveries made buying up clearance vinyl. First few listens wasn't sure what I'd gotten into, but it kept finding it's way back to the turntable and really grew on my. Maybe because it was my first exposure to them but this is still my favorite album of theirs. Ed's voice has gotten smoother on this album than it was on the first, and the band really explores a lot of musical territory from punk fury of "Anger" to a melodic ballet "In Memory of Elizabeth Cotton". and even Includes a very REMish sounding cut called "For The Singer of REM" that has previously been posted on the MOG. I have had friends be really surprised they were still hearing the same album a few songs down the road. .Only video I could find for this album is below: "Hear Me" .Red button above is for my favorite cut "Honey, Please". I'll post anther one or two in the comments.
