MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Track: Peace Love And Understanding, (What's So Funny 'Bout)
(93)

Got the hint to post some Brinsly Schwarz. Wonderful stuff it is. This band featured a young Nick Lowe on bass and most vocals. Figured I'd start with the song that catches most people attention as a surprize. This is the original version of Peace, Love and Understanding sung by Nick Lowe, who wrote it and produced the much more known later cover version by Elvis Costello. This version was produced by Dave Edmund and is a little more melodic and lacks a bit of the bite of Elvis' version but is great none the less. I'll follow with a few more Brinsley ditties in the comments section. The wikipedia listing for these guys has some good info on them too.

I always knew Nick Lowe wrote the song and gave it to EC I just never heard that he had recorded it with a different band. Thanks for the info, good sounds too!

Just got off of Allmusic.com, after looking up Brinsley Schwarz, and found this "Lowe and Schwarz had already spent several years in Kippington Lodge, a Tunbridge Wells-based guitar pop group that released five singles on Parlophone during the mid-'60s to no success." I have no idea if these are commerically available currently, but thought you might be interested.

I have heard many versions of this - Elvis's of course, and two versions from Nick. He redid the song on one of his solo LPs, and there's a live (I think) slowed-down acoustic version on the box set. I never even knew that B.S. (unfortunate acronym) did this, and now I discover it's my favorite of all that I've heard.

I tend to second that, it takes a moment to get around Costello's version, This has got a sweeter quality to it. Is this Lowe singing? because I'm reminded of some other song I just can't place at the moment.

one of my all time fave tunes, and I happen to like the BS version more than the Costello one... my fave of their albums is Silver Pistol, which I wish was better known..
