Album:Sea Green, See Blue
I’ve been sluggish with these end-of-year things. Sluggisher than I planned to be, at any rate. Here’s another one that I hardly even had to think about. But to create the illusion that I did, here are the criteria that I am making up right now on the spot. To be considered, an EP may have no more than 7 songs. It may not contain more than one cover song, and no animals may have been harmed in its production.
Jaymay's Sea Green, See Blue (iTunes, InSound) is an 11 out of 10. It came out pretty early in the year, and usually (personally) I catch myself having a huge bias for late-year releases when I look back on what I liked best. Primacy, I believe they call that. When the cognitive scholars talk memory. Back off man, I'm a scientist. But I'd guess that Sea Green, See Blue saw at least 2-3 plays a week consistently all year long on my recently defunct iPod. And it was a must-include in the first round of Gmini loading. So what's so great about it? God. Everything. Lyrics (clever, not pretentious), instrumentation (interesting choices), production (sparse, lets the music speak for itself), performance (when Jaymay sings, you LISTEN). And to see her live! Please, try to get yourself to a show. If you're in the NYC area, it's not hard. She plays all the time, and often for free. Really, I can't say enough good things. She's amazing. This isn't from the EP, but please sample this live recording of Jaymay at her finest:Jaymay - You Are The Only One I Love (mp3, right click to download.)
