WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Tapes 'N Tapes; the Secret to Mog Success

Posted over 3 years ago
Seeing as I read blogs, and I listen to music (see:this website), I'm supposed to listen to Tapes 'N Tapes. TNT are the blogosphere (God, I hate that word) golden children, garnering praise for their lo-fi style that reminds people of the Shins. I think It was the Shins, I'm not sure. So, I got a hold of their new album, "The Loon", and used it as a background to me playing NCAA Football 07. Overall, I enjoyed the album. TNT provided a nice escape in their music, something you could listen to a few more times. The shorter songs you want to be longer, and it feels like the album is over-but you're rewarded with another track. Truth be told, I was disappointed when it was over. Go get The Loon for yourself.===========Where's the hip-hop on MOG? As a music website, I expected MOG to have many different influences and takes on genres. A quick look at the MOGospehere reveals many posts about indie-and-semi-mainstream rock, but no hip-hop. OK, there was one post about an "ill Weeezy mix." Honestly, I wonder why there aren't more posts about backpack/garage hip-hop. Kanye ushered in some great new artists-Lupe Fiasco, Rhymefest- and put more light one established ones-such as Common. Hell, a J5, De La Soul, or A Tribe Called Quest shout. But no, MOG is dominated by indie kids and music snobs. A little diversity would help, I think. ==================== Currently, I'm "Toasty". I have no idea what the fuck that means, but I'm saying this for transparency. Wanna know how to get "Blazing" on here (insert marijuana reference as humor anecdote)? Easy, write a post about some hypothetical topic that people can debate over like "Top 7 Songs to have Sex To When You're thinking of Uses for the Pythagorean Thereom in the new Tom Petty album" and post every 4 seconds (I'm working on the latter). So, here's a list: Top 5 bands with names missing or having too much punctuation or oddly placed caps:1.iwouldsetmyselfonfireforyou2.boysetsfire3.XanythingX4.Say Anything...5.Panic! At the Disco.

  1. Dean Browell says I just got into Tapes n Tapes too, but I was more impressed by Margot & the Nuclear So and So's. And I just Mogged on J5 a few days ago. I think the stuff is there... There's a lot of electronic and DJ-oriented fans on Mog too, but they aren't as vocal in terms of posts. But you can't be shocked when an entire blogging site that utilizes iTunes doesn't have an overwhelming amount of material that typically isn't found on actual iTunes (the store, or just in digital rotation). And added to that is the blogging culture itself-- are there a ton of backpack/garage hip-hop bloggers out there? Because emo crap is blogged about constantly- it's one of the things the listeners do the most. So acting shocked when a music niche that actually doesn't blog much isn't blogging probably isn't the best rationale. I've been "blazing" for nearly a month now and some weeks I don't post at all. So who knows. Maybe it's based on pageviews. This place is hardly perfect, but it is, at least, a sum of its parts. I kind of like that its not beholden to one type of music or another. I've found that posting about some obscure singer-songwriter will get me as many comments as a post about Gnarls; and that's pretty cool, I think. No one is being blocked out of this place, so it will always be as diverse as its audience. It's far more democratic than most sites.

  2. CBSchick says This is going to make some people a little peeved but whatever - Just before I read your post, I was actually thinking to myself, "I don't think I can go to the mog-o-sphere anymore, " and then I read your post!... there's way too many self-righteous people who think their word is THE word ... too many people who declare the most obscure bands ever as 'the greatest bands on the universe' - which is a total crap... to many pople who write off anything in the mainstream as junk that's not worth listening to (because they are music snobs)... too many people who seem to want to 'one-up' everyone else. Ahhhhhh, please excuse my rant. Had to get that out there. Anyway, I have to throw this in there too - I really like Rhymefest. I wish people would go out and by his album because he is just f-ing cool. He's on the label I work at and he's just such a good guy. Great heart, great message, great role model. I really hope he makes it in this business.
