30 june 2006 at the southgate house(www.southgatehouse.com) in beautiful newport, kentucky(technically part of greater cincinatti). when our windshield was flown into by an actual wild turkey en route, i knew it was going to be a grand night.Murder Junkies (www.myspace.com/murderjunkies) opened. Dino came out in thonged glory with acapella versions of "your cheatin heart" and "you've lost that loving feelin" then all hell broke loose. I'm pretty sure it was jeff from antiseen on vocals, but regardless, it was a heavy dose of rock and roll. that bassline was fierce. Oh yeah, they gave Dino an in-band tour award for the most fucked up occurences on tour. He lost his wallet and passport after leaving his britches somewhere since forgotten and had erection issues in amsterdam. brilliant. look for an album soon, i hope.Hank3 and the Damned Band (www.hank3.com) then took the stage. It is refreshing to hear a band you enjoy live and these motherfuckers gave it their all. Beginning with the Louvin Brothers sample that starts their latest "Straight to Hell", they kicked it in with the title track. Other tracks from that album were "Pills I Took", "Country Heroes", pieces from "Lovesick, Broke, and Drifting", some David Allen Coe, some Senior, if I'm not mistaken, there was a Junior piece in there as well, and one of my favorites is their rendition of "Cocaine Blues"(Cash version). Of note was the break mid-set to call Philip Anselmo to wish him a happy goddammed birthday. Hellbilly took over to amp it all up, and true to form, they broke for 2 minutes at the max, and Assjack took over. Jesus Christ!!!! loud, heavy, beautiful cacophanic sound. This Assjack set was a bit longer than the one I remembered from Atlanta in 2005 and this crowd was up to the task of giving back what the band was feeding them.People, go see Hank3. If you hate country, this will open your ears. Besides, with a little patience your ass WILL get thrashed by the end of the night:)
