MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

(26)

put together an 80's soundtrack!  My good friend has an idea for an 80's movie and I am going to put together the most bitchin' 80's soundtrack EVER!  Help me out...what are your suggestions?

So there are a couple of rules...

1.  All songs must be written in the 80s

2.  All songs must be written before 1986

3.  John Hughes must come out of hibernation and direct this movie

I have already chosen a song...Real Life's Catch Me I'm Falling.  Let's do this!!!!!!!

update

Rough outline of the movie...

"It's the year 2008 and the Class of 1986 finds out there was a computer glitch that has prevented the whole class from graduating.  Little do they know that it was their Principal that has sabotaged their graduation and they now find themselves without degrees more then 20 years later.  They must now go back for the last 2 weeks of school.  Some of the members of the class of 86' have changed, others will always remain the same, but one thing is for certain...High School was a bitch!"

Run To The hills - Iron Maiden (I might be wrong on the date of that one)

Panama - Van Halen or maybe "Janies Crying"

One night In Bangkok - Taco

Break My Stride - Wilder Mathew

Somebody's Watching me - Rockwell

A Flock of Seagulls' "Space Age Love Song" needs to make an appearance for the inevitible jock-guy/geek-girl romance scene.

The beginning scene, where the valedictorian finds out his diploma is invalid as he's trying to land that coveted VP position, should be soundtracked by The Smiths' "Panic".

R.E.M - Driver 8

Let's Active - Every Word Means No

Misstee says:

Wasn't Tide is High written in '79?

Posted
| Permalink
Anna says:

Ah! Blondie covered it in 1980, but I guess that doesn't count.

Posted
| Permalink

i just wiki'd it...apparently written in the 60's covered by Blondie.

Funny story about Tom Waits.  My friend said his dad took him to see Tom in concert when he was 9.  His dad turns to him right before he is about to sing and says "Son, you will never hear anything like this, ever again."

So, shouldn't the timeframe really be 1982 to 1986?

Great movie concept!

I'll say...

Crowded House - Don't dream it's over

Level 42 - Something About You

Love My Way - Psych. Furs

Do these sound teen angst-y enough?

I don't know how to speak 80's let alone write in it.  Is that like binary type language or something?  This is a tough assignment.

Hi Anna!

Tyler - We're not gonna take it!  Good one!

Posted
| Permalink

something about Violent Femmes first record in there ... Please Please Please Do Not Go, or Kiss Off

Posted
| Permalink

We're not gonna take it...AWESOME

carmenSD - I guess that would make sense.  So many good songs from 80 and 81 though...and Love My Way...HUGE YES!

Posted
| Permalink

Well, since the plot is pretty outlandish I guess I can't really hold you for using songs outside the timeframe. I mean, if you're gonna go crazy, go crazy.

Posted
| Permalink

At least go for the lesser known "Too Fast For Love" Crue if your gonna do Crue.

Posted
| Permalink
contra - i was going to do some crue.  i was going to do looks that kill

TylerDurden says:

Thanks SUNNY-D -> you're looking FINE -> aren't you going to drop a few songs??

TylerDurden says:

We've got a bigger problem now -. Dead Kennedy's

Terminal Preppie -> Dead Kennedy's (great album name: "Plastic Surgery Disasters" 1982)

so they go back to schoole for 2 weeks to get their diplomas? Well, what the hell happened for the 20 years they were out of school? It's got potential, I'm digging all the songs people are dropping, but Pat, I think you'll have to release a 5 CD compilation of the songs that never made it onto the Soundtrack ->

Posted
| Permalink

tyler...hahaha.  5 cds full of songs...the rate we are going i'd say 10.  i think the story line is going to incorporate a computer glitch that happens in the present day that is set off by the principal, so all this time they were graduated until the glitch.

I'm not sure of the exact dates on these tunes, but I'm pretty sure they're all pre 1986:

"Don't You Forget About Me" - Simple Minds

"Once in a Lifetime" - Talking Heads

"Safety Dance" - Men Without Hats

"You Spin Me Round" - Dead or Alive

What? No Clash? Well "Combat Rock" is certainly fair game (Rock The Casbah, Should I Stay Or Should I Go) - and even though it's not packed with hits, "Sandanista!" was released late '80 and I'd say there's more depth in that one..(Somebody Got Murdered, Police on My Back, Charlie Don't Surf)

Elvis Costello - Beyond Belief '82

Prince's Purple Rain is '84 (When Doves Cry)

And finally Big Audio Dynamite's first "This Is" came out '85, fertile ground with both Medicine Show and The Bottom Line

A lot of great tunes in this post!!

i was going to put Magnificent Seven in there.

The quintessential one hit wonder track "Voices Carry"('85) by Til Tuesday has to make the cut!

The Cure's "Close To Me" or "A Night Like This" off "Head On The Door"('85). Or "The Hanging Garden" but no "The Lovecats", "The Caterpillar" or "Let's Go To Bed" please, since they've been overplayed to death.

I'll go with some of what others have suggested... Psych Furs (definitely), "Valley Girl" by Zappa (I was IN the Valley when that song came out... oh the irony!) Sandinista-era Clash, (too bad "Squeezing out Sparks" came out in '79... "Discovering Japan" or "Local Girls" would be great"... how about Parker's "Break Them Down"?)

XTC "Senses Working Overtime", Peter Gabriel's "Games Without Frontiers", The Call's "The Walls Came Down",

Also.. Wall of Voodoo "Mexican Radio" or "Can't Make Love" or "Ring Of Fire"... Rush "Spirit of the Radio" or "Tom Sawyer" (seriously, you couldn't go to the beach without hearing a boombox booming out those two songs....)

Do I win some sort of prize for using Rush and Wall of Voodoo in the same comment?

If the (English) Beat is involved, "Save It For Later" is a must. And as a real left-field choice, Westworld's brain-rattling technobilly raver "Sonic Boom Boy." But I have so many suggestions and no patience to set 'em all down. Good luck. w.t.c.

How about more of The Police (NOT Every Breath You Take, please, but anything else.....like SynchronicityII)

Some Duran Duran--Rio or Save a Prayer

The Polecats--Make a Circuit With Me

Bow Wow Wow---Baby Oh No

Tears for Fears--Change, or Pale Shelter or Everybody Wants to Rule...

What? No Hall & Oates? There needs to be something on that list. "You Make My Dreams" is one of my favorite songs of all time, but I'm sure there's something else suitable to the plot. "Maneater"? "One on One"?
