This is a question I have been asking myself for a while now. People are bugging me to join Facebook, but I just can't muster up the strength to join another social network that I will be wasting time on. What am I to do?

Gotta throw down some loot for these bad boys.

Either those or the Johnny Marr designed shoes.

The New Balance shoes get my vote since I love NB and it's extra width.

I need help!!! MOG help me!!!!!!

put together an 80's soundtrack! My good friend has an idea for an 80's movie and I am going to put together the most bitchin' 80's soundtrack EVER! Help me out...what are your suggestions?

So there are a couple of rules...

1. All songs must be written in the 80s

2. All songs must be written before 1986

3. John Hughes must come out of hibernation and direct this movie

I have already chosen a song...Real Life's Catch Me I'm Falling. Let's do this!!!!!!!

update

Rough outline of the movie...

"It's the year 2008 and the Class of 1986 finds out there was a computer glitch that has prevented the whole class from graduating. Little do they know that it was their Principal that has sabotaged their graduation and they now find themselves without degrees more then 20 years later. They must now go back for the last 2 weeks of school. Some of the members of the class of 86' have changed, others will always remain the same, but one thing is for certain...High School was a bitch!"

How Siouxsie changed my world.

I remember the first time I heard Siouxsie sing. The album was Tinderbox, and I stole it from my cousin! She had a crapload of tapes sitting around and I remember grabbing a couple. Those pile of tapes pretty much changed my life. In that pile...

1. Siouxsie and the Banshees - Tinderbox

2. Kraftwerk - Electric Cafe

3. Echo and the Bunnymen - Echo and the Bunnymen

and my other cousin's cd...

4. AC/DC - Back in Black

This was enough to send a 7th grader into some serious musical decision making. It opened up the world to me.

Owen @ Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco 7/29/2008

The whole day did not, in fact, revolve around this show. It actually revolved around the fact that I was about to get 2 wisdom teeth pulled out of my head. I was especially afraid of looking like a chipmunk after the procedure and have always heard of horror stories of the swelling never really going away. Why do people tell you these things?

The wisdom teeth were pulled at around 3:30 in the afternoon and I was supposed to be doped up with Nitrous...well I was, but I didn't really feel it doing much of anything. Anyway, aside from some bleeding and two holes in my gums, I would have to say that I felt rather good. I made dinner for my wife and drooled over not being able to consume any of it, and then we promptly changed to head into the city.

A good friend of mine got us tickets and we headed into Bottom of the Hill and this being my first time and all I gave it a good going over. It was small as expected but nice inside. There were quite a few people there and I quickly found out that the show was sold out. Rocky Votolato was headlining the event, but I was there to see Kinsella being a fan of American Football, Joan of Arc, and Capn' Jazz. I'll skip to Owen's set as the opener was someone I hadn't heard of...

Like many of his shows that I've caught and heard of, Mike was talking to the crowd quite a bit. He opened with a song that was interupted by cell phone interference coming from his monitors...it seemed to lighten the mood even more.

By the third song, it was apparent that someone needed to turn that sh!t off. Ahhhh back to Owen and his delicate fingerwork on the guitar. Being a guitarist, I am always impressed by his work on the instrument and have found respect for his vocals as well. I felt a connection with his lyrics and it was obvious that his storytelling was comical as well. We come from the same generation.

Here is a band straight out of Sweden. They are excellent like most music that comes out of Sweden. If you know me, I've been high on Swedish bands for a long time now and it seems like they "get it". Or at least they know how to appeal to my musical senses. I am not sure if they've made a splash here in the US, but I would really like to introduce them to MOG. Has anyone heard of them prior to this???

New Wave Wednesday - A Popular History of Signs

I don't know too much about this band. They are very obscure to me, but I've had this album for years. Somethings just sit on the shelf for no reason...no reason at all.

from TrouserPress.com

Led by singer/bassist/keyboardist Andrew Jarman (vocally something of a David Byrne student), this London quartet drifts between arty synth-dance and lightly played mood music. Using dinky electronic percussion rather than a drummer in the early days, the enigmatic group's records alternately wax chilly, funky, humorless and clever.

Save for a few exceptions on Side Two, the poorly structured songs on Comrades typically work one groove for several minutes and then fade out with the vocals still going. Despite the nicely spare arrangements, provocative subject matter ("Lenin," for instance), crystalline production and flawless playing, this is a mighty boring way to spend an afternoon.

Ministry's Al Jourgensen remixed "Ladder Jack" and "House" for the eponymous American 12-inch, a four-song sampling of the band's pre-Comrades 45s. Both of those remixes also appear on Taste, a 1980-'87 singles compilation that presents an absurdly bloodless trashing of Lou Reed's "Rock &Roll" and adds two previously unreleased items, including an awfully strange cover of John Fogerty's "Run Through the Jungle."

Fielding a solid five-man lineup, APHOS comes out of the woods on the obviously commercial England in the Rain. Unlike its previous unpredictable self-indulgences, the band now reveals a clear-cut focus: the half-dozen peppy songs are all standard stylish modern dance rock that compares favorably to Wang Chung and that whole post-Ultravox ilk. If Jarman weren't such a duff singer, these attractively produced tracks might be really appealing.

As you can tell I am trying to build up connections through flickr and twitter. I currently don't have facebook because I don't want to waste anymore time. I know I would be on it a lot. I have a xanga account and I used to religiously update that thing. It is now officially pretty dead. Like a fish out of water. Hopefully this MOG will make it. I almost shut it down a couple of months ago just because I was having so many problems with uploading stuff. There are still many things to improve with MOG and I feel it's starting to get there. Hang in there friends!

The Roots @ Paramount Theatre,Oakland CA

This show opened up with the Roots since the headliner of the night was Erykah Badu. Unfortunately I didn't get to see her and I hope that doesn't taint this review.

I was able to take a few snaps of the show even though I was warned many times that there were to be no photos allowed. Fortunately our seats weren't ridiculously out there in the theatre and I was able to get some decent photos. The Roots went on mighty early with an onstage time of 7:30. I could still hear people filing in probably just fresh from a shower out of the house after work or maybe they were stuck in the bar line which was INSANE. The theatre itself is old but has tons of character.

The band kicked off the night with a bang and this train never really stopped. I felt like the entire 1 hour set was a medley of mixing older songs off "Do You Want More?", "Things Fall Apart" and their newest "Rising Down". The highlight of the evening for me was "You Got Me", a track off of "TFA" which features Badu singing the melody. Instead Captain Kirk tore up the set with his vocal and guitar abilities. I seriously thought I was watching a mix of Lenny Kravitz, Prince, and Jimi unfold onstage. I couldn't keep my eyes on anyone onstage for more than 30 seconds because each of them deserved the spotlight. ?uest was ontop of his game (when is he never?). At one point he threw this jungle beat in there that blew my mind. Brain matter oozing, I managed to pick out exactly why he is such a special human being. It's his afro. The power that is his hair.

It doesn't surprise me that these guys each have a hand in throwing together a DJ set that rivals anyone. Their mixture of old school and new school make them the perfect candidates to also be well rounded DJ's. ?uest mentioned that he spins more than he drums and it's no wonder that his tendencies for taking a production role on so many records. I feel he has way more to offer the music world than his drumming. Black Thought garners the same respect.

We missed Erykah but hung out in the tour bus, so it was worth missing.

WOW...this is not good. I heard there was a teenager involved in the crash as well. The man was apparently drunk at the time and fell asleep at the wheel. Many prayers go out to the victims and their families. One is dead and many more in critical condition.

coffee? or tea?

I have been starting my mornings off this week with a cup of coffee. When I was working for my previous company, that was part of the routine. But ever since I quit that job, the routine didn't include coffee. Well it's back, and I've missed it sooooo much.

I've been particularly impressed with this blend that I got at Trader Joes. It's a dark french roast and I really enjoy my coffee strong.

So MOG, are you drinking coffee? or tea?

American Football...#61

it was my number when I played football in high school. There are many great things about football. I learned a lot about teamwork and how to deal with personalities. There were lots of different people on your team, but you all had one goal...to win. You could say football is beyond sports since it teaches you so many life lessons. We laughed, cried, and got angry together.

So this is my post dedicated to the sport, and although I listened to really really heavy music before each game, this post features a band I really enjoy listening to...American Football.

Members of an unknown Amazon Basin tribe and their dwellings are seen during a flight over the Brazilian state of Acre along the border with Peru in this May, 2008 photo distributed by FUNAI, the government agency for the protection of indigenous peoples. Survival International estimates that there are over 100 uncontacted tribes worldwide, and says that uncontacted tribes in the region are under increasing threat from illegal logging over the border in Peru.

Haircut!

My wife says I have lego man hair. So I guess it looks like this.

I have to agree with her...it looks somewhat like that. I was supposed to get my haircut yesterday but it got moved to tomorrow. So here are a few styles that I find super awesome and will consider.

1. The Mohawk: Everyone wants to be punk in some way. This haircut really gives people that look.

2. The shit: This style requires extreme clipper skills. I might have to look for a new place to get my doo. HA. Get it?

3. The oh shit: Where clipper skills are completely ignored.

4. Hat head: Again clipper skills. This time hella serious ones.

5. The uncle Jesse mullet: Stamos'd. I would need to grow the back way long. You know what they say, business in the front...party in the back.

New Wave Wednesday! ...plus movie spoiler!

This song was first discovered while I was watching one of my favorite movies of all time, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. The song starts playing at the end of the movie when Steve Martin's character suddenly realizes that John Candy's character doesn't have a home and is all alone. I remember winning a huge poster from my art class in 8th grade for a contest I entered. I hung it in my room and disposed of it in high school which I regret to this day.

The Dream Academy quickly became one of my favorite new wave bands after that. They always had a very inviting sound and the vocals have always brought me back. What's up with all this nostalgia...geez.

One of the funniest scenes in the movie!!! THOSE AREN'T PILLOWS!!!

I got a call from an old friend who I haven't seen in a while. We used to hang in Jr. High listening to Motley Crue and playing Turbo Grafx 16. Amazing times were had listening to the entire side A of Shout at the Devil while reading car magazines and fantasizing about driving my uncles Lexus (the first year they came out). Now we are all grown up, but I don't mind popping in some Crue.

Why is this so catchy?

Calvin Harris and Vegas. There is something about this song. It makes me want to go to Vegas. I miss the smell of heavy cigarette smoke, the lights and sounds of all the slot machines. The all you can eat buffets. If there is a time to go it might be before the summer really settles in because it can get waaaaaay hot over there. Heat and Pat don't mix well.

Me'Shell NdegeOcello @ The Chicago Zoo on Earth Day

My wife and I happened to be in Chicago when Earth day arrived and it was actually her who noticed a free concert going on at the Chicago Zoo. I was excited to hear that Me'Shell was going to be there. This would be the first time I caught her playing live.

We got to the Zoo quite early to see all the awesome animals they have there...if you didn't know, the zoo is free and is a great spot to take your young ones. There were a bunch of vendors there giving away free stuff as well. Me'Shell was to go on at 2pm so we waited a good 4 hours to see her. When it was finally time, I pushed my way to the front of the crowd to snap some shots of her.

One of the highlights was hearing their cover of Joy Division's Wilderness. The styles of music she is mixing works really well. It's easy to see why a lot of her followers have not accepted her newest album because she teeters on so many musical boundaries. Her mix of funk, soul, punk, and rock leaves the audience wondering what she can't play. It was nice to see her lead the band without a bass because I had always known her just as a bass player. She opened my eyes into her world of music which I think closely reminds me of Prince, one of her idols.

Her band also kicked some major ass. You know she is capable of attracting some great talent on each instrument. It was a treat to see these guys in the windy city. What a way to spend vacation.

Helmet. The band you should know.

Seriously, Page Hamilton is so awesome. Many of you might not have known that he was in Band of Susans and that he embraced the music of fellow New York acts Sonic Youth...this seemed to carry over into Helmet as their first recordings were somewhat raw and unrefined. It's this that I want to bring to MOG, a lesser known Helmet...the one that evolved but never forgot it's roots.

I applaud you for listening.

OMG, MOG, I am back! And with a concert review!

So I found it appropriate to post about the Mary Onettes gig that I happened to catch while they were in SF this past thursday since it was here that I was introduced to them. They made their SF debut at a place called PopScene which I have never heard of before. The place is interesting and they cater to dudes like me who love my post-punk music. The place isn't that big, and perfect for taking photos in.......BUT....yeah they wouldn't let me shoot anything in there. WTF hella big thumbs down for that. I may be banning that place for this simple fact.

So that was downer #1...onto downer #2. Yo scenesters please don't squeeze your way in front of my wife who happens to be petite because then she can't see anything...that's why we waited a half hour before the band went on in the front. I don't think that was cool...not one freaking bit.

But the Mary O's were great. The bass player almost hashed "Void" as I could tell the lead singer was not happy about the half measure that he came in on early. They had a laugh at the end of the song, but eyes were rolling and everything when a trainwreck was just missed. You had to be there because it was funny. har.

So there have been many awesome outings that I haven't shared about on MOG and I am trying to resurrect this thing. I just about canceled my account because I used to MOG at my old job which sucked balls. It just reminded me of sitting in an office wasting my life away. I hope this turns a new chapter in my music blogging life. Thanks for your support.

Uncle Buck and his mighty soundtrack!

Guess what movie I caught a few scenes from yesterday when I was eating lunch.

Uncle Buck!!! I also watched Coming to America a week ago. These are classic 80's movies. So the reason why I bring up Uncle Buck is because this movie reminds me of the time my good friend Dave Siegel looked up the soundtrack to find the song that plays at the end of the movie. For some reason John Hughes has this knack for picking out these awesome songs. Especially the ones at the end of John Candy movies. So Dave was in a desperate search for this song, but came up empty handed. He finally tracked down the song by Hugh Harris called "Rhythm of Life". Dave went out and bought the entire album and to his dismay everything else on the album was complete crap, except that one song. I later found this album years later in the bargain bin at Rasputin for 25 cents. I had to pick it up.

MOGGERS...question of the day!

OK, so this question is totally relevant to MOG. I've been listening to music on the computer for years now and I've always been PC based. Apple will have to wait until I can afford to buy their products...anyway I have been using Winamp for the longest time. I've used iTunes and it's nice and clean, but I have always been so used to Winamp. It allows me to play files like .flac, .shn, .wav, .mp4, you name it and there is a plugin for it. So my question is:

Which player do you use?

For a more complete list of media players...go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_media_players

kicksnare and i have been recording our jams and things are coming together nicely. i love to fact that it's all improvised and that allows the freedom to explore. i have been in situations in the past where everyone was into the whole session/studio aspect of playing. perfection which led to many fights and bickering. i want to steer clear of playing like that and allow myself to express what i really feel. our bass player friend will be joining us to make a trio and he is the perfect fit. we'll post more in the future but for now here are some clips to wet the appetite.

This one has music...

OK..music post!!! I love this band called Stars of Track and Field. Great mixture of electronic and organic instruments. This track "Fantastic" ends up at the end of the album and really wraps up a good listen all around. So I chose this song to represent how I feel about the album as a whole. It's definitely worth a listen.

THE worst place on planet earth...

...has to be Michael's. That craft/fabric store. Everytime I get dragged there, I see men like me with their wives and we all have the same look on our face. Here is a quick and easy solution that I've come up with...it's genius and soooo simple.

In every Michael's that exists in the World, why not build a bar/pub that joins the place. You can call it Mike's bar or St. Mikes or Mike's Sports bar or Mikey's Pub n' stuff. JUST DO IT FOR EVERY MAN WHO HAS HAD TO STEP FOOT IN THAT GOD AWFUL PLACE!!!! Oh and that Joann's place sucks too. Thanks for reading MOG!

Logh - The Bones of Generations

I got a suit
I got a black suit
You got horns but I got a black suit

I got a band
I got a black band
You got thorns and I got a black band

You got a shield
You got a black shield
I got a point but you got a black shield

I got a wish
I got a death wish
You got a badge but I got a death wish

The truth I know can not be bent, oh no
It has been raised as a monument to the dead
The truth they say is stated in the Book of Revelations
The truth I know is mounted on the bones of generations

I got a mark
I got a black mark
You got a book
At least you've got a book

Question of the day: Has anyone used this before???

These things started popping up at supermarkets a couple of years ago. I use this thing all the time when my wife and I go to our local Nob Hill grocery store. The thing is, I don't think it saves you time at all. In fact it takes longer because the thing makes you wait for a response and stuff. I can see how it saves time if you have 1 or 2 items and there is a huge line at the cashier, but other than that having your normal grocery load will take you quite a bit of time.

Plus I hate getting beer then realizing that some manager has to come and check to see if I am over 21. But I will not stop using it. There is just something about having control over everything.

Von Iva - Where U At

Girls that rock....rock!!! Von Iva consists of 3 members. No guitars involved here, just the beats from a kit, the new wave synth sounds from the keyboard, and vox lines that would make Bon Scott (RIP) proud. They put on quite a show as well. Check them out MOG!

New Wave Wednesday!!!

Missing Persons! Dale and Terry Bozzio. I view Gwen Stefani as the Dale Bozzio of today...just a little. And Terry B has got to be one of the most ridiculous drummers ever. I remember listening to him on Zappa records, then my friend told me I had to listen to Missing Persons...this was years and years ago, but I fell in love with their sound. Synth bass...sooo new wave! They were also respected by musicians, so you know they weren't just a fluff band. They had the chops, the flare, and the sound...Missing Persons.

Meg, Tony, and Page asked us to come down to the studio just to hang out. Sharkbite studios in Oakland to be exact. It was a treat to see them doing overdubs and doing studio things. Like sitting there and listening for hours...the new stuff sounds freaking amazing! It was cool meeting Toshi Kasai who was engineering the effort. He has worked with some of my favorite bands and is also a swell guy to hang out with. Check out some of the pics...

Your thoughts on the Superbowl and Tom Petty!

If I am going to watch the Superbowl halftime show, the musical act might as well be someone I admire quite a bit. Last year was pretty awesome a s Prince came out looking like...well Prince. He kicked some ass. This year Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers took the stage and I have to admit, I liked it quite a bit.

I was on my way out the door yesterday so I couldn't elaborate on my new job. I am now officially an employee of the dopest company in the world. Check out the website... www.monocase.com

So my position there will be cross-functional and multi-faceted. It's going to be a challenge as some of the responsibilities are new to me, but I welcome the challenge. I expect to kick some ass. Some of you may know my new boss. www.mog.com/kicksnare It's weird calling him my boss, as I am sure it's weird for him to hear it as well. In all he is a great friend and I will enjoy this opportunity to add another dimension to our friendship. Some of the stuff we do I can't even imagine is called work. Like going to shows and meeting rockstars. It hella beats what I was doing before...the F word...Finance.

I am not sure if he will ever be able to find the right notes to sing. In fact I would put money down to say he might be the most tone deaf person in the world. I find this absolutely hilarious and down right wrong! Why would I subject everyone here at Mog to this? It's called love. I love you guys!

The 4 days that is known as NAMM was both exciting and exhausting at the same time. Standing on your feet for 10 hours a day can do that to you. One thing about NAMM is that you get to see rock stars right and left...there was...

-the Chad Smith siting! no pictures!!!!! He was walking in between hotels when D spotted him and we totally accosted him.

-Page Hamilton stopped by...2 times! He is fronting the company as our featured artist. Page is awesome...as a person and musician. People just don't understand how awesome he is.

-Victor Wooten, one of our newest endorsees had people following him into the booth. I saw him doing a clinic up at the Fodera booth. A mob of people were gathered just to hear him play. It was amazing...his playing is absolutely a treat.

-Will Calhoun of Living Colour got a message from a friend about the products. He came down with his crew.

-Cliff Morrison, the son of Jim Morrison is now endorsing the products. It was by chance that we met him, and we were able to catch his live performance at the Hilton. I can't tell you how much he sounds like his dad. It's actually kind of scary.

Funky Friday...here we go yo.

Not sure if I would call this pure funky...more like jazz funk. But I had to dig this one up...Scofield and MMW with A Go Go. They dropped some heavy grooves, but I like this song probably the best. It's relaxing and chill kind of like the title...jeep on 35...

Midnight Oil - The Dead Heart.....makes me alive!

The Oils. I love this disc, The Real Thing...it's got a few studio tracks with a live show sandwiched in between them. The first time I heard this album I knew it in my heart to give the Oils my dedication to appreciated live efforts. They simply blew me away with this one. The set includes some classics all done with an acoustic flair. Their sound comes through even more alive and the message hits home just as hard. I always loved the way they told stories and it all starts with Peter Garrett and his environmental stand against wasteful lands. It's no surprise to see him in politics in his homeland.

Bear Quartet...more from Sweden!

The Bear's first album from 1992. Kicks some serious ass. BQ have many many albums under their belt some reaching critical acclaim in their native Sweden often being compared to the Smiths. That might be a little far fetched. I've had the privilege to follow their career almost in its entirety and I've got to say they have definitely matured. Every album has it's own identity and you can see the shift in styles through the years. One thing remains constant...they are Bear Quartet.

An interesting fact about all their album titles. Every title is two words and the first word always ends with the letter "y".

Who here likes the Happy Mondays? They totally expanded my train of musical thinking. I was way into one-dimentional (but awesome) bands at the time...then they came along and just blew me to bits. I appreciate everything they stand for!

As you know I love seeing live music much like most of you my fellow moggers. Here is a list of bands that are coming into the area that I really want to see:

1. Autolux 1/31
2. The Helio Sequence 2/29
3. The Mountain Goats 3/1
4. Super Furry Animals 2/9
5. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
6. Bob Mould Band 3/26
7. Tilly and the Wall 3/2
8. Matthew Good 3/9
9. Pinback 2/10
10. Siouxsie - The Mantaray & More Tour 2/12-2/13
11. Built to Spill 2/24-2/25

I won't be able to see them all, but 5 would be perfect. Which 5 would you choose?

I've been away Mog...to all my contacts on here...I've missed each and everyone of you. I am in bit of a transition these days and pardon me if I don't elaborate, but it's going to be an exciting journey. I hope to share a bit more as the transition is complete.

So of course what do I do when I need some downtime and to relax from all the stress of change? I listen to music...to where my roots are. New Order to be exact. I've always turned to these guys for sonic gratification when times are a changing. I found this live clip of them and it's hilarious because you can hear Bernard start out in the wrong key! How dare he ruin the song!!! I still love it.

Seriously where was I when they came out with this album? This power pop trio has done me in with their song "The Actress". It's seriously a great song.

Hailing from New York this quartet blends the characteristics of electronics with driving guitar lines. They remind me of a band called Nightmare of You but with more electronic influence. They've also decided to give out free mp3's of a few songs off their site.

Imperial Teen with Von Iva @ The Independent 12/13/07

This was my first time seeing Roddy Bottum and his spectacular band Imperial Teen so it was definitely a treat to snap photos of the band. I missed the first opening act completely. Not one song. But I was lucky enough to catch Von Iva who seriously impressed me. They even got me dancing...a little, and that's pretty darn good. In any case, they hella rocked.

It was big beats and lots of synth bass parts with ACDC written all over it. I am sure a lot of you moggers out there will hella dig this stuff.

Imperial Teen took center stage at around 10:00 but right before they started their set I saw...Mark Eitzel! I had to run over and introduce myself being a big American Music Club fan and all. He told me they aren't planning to gig until April sometime. I hate that I couldn't make it out to their show at Rickshaw Place earlier this month.

It was also great talking to Jone from Imperial Teen who told us they hadn't played since October, but there weren't cobwebs during their set. It was great to hear their raw punk like quality. They hit in full stride after a few songs to tease the audience. I kept wondering why this band didn't get more recognition. It was an awesome evening and I enjoyed seeing them for the first time. I hope to catch them the next time they take the stage

- Review of the Imperial Teen show at the Independent on 12/13.

I am BACK...with photos!!!

That's right. I am back and the new MOG is up. It's weird how you get used to one thing and then one day it's gone and you have to get used to another thing. So this new MOG now has Rhapsody involved. We'll see how I like that.

So on our mini vacation we went to the Living Desert animal park in Palm Desert CA. It was really nice getting to be outdoors this time of year and not freeze your ass off. It was probably 60 something degrees outside and it was great for taking a few pictures. Most of the animals were just lounging. Here is a list of animals we encountered.

Golden Eagle - This thing was huge. One of the park rangers said it only weighed it at 9 pounds...but trust me...the thing was huge.

African Wild Dog

Arabian Camel - There were two of them. One would not leave the other alone.

Goats - Lazy. They were so relaxed.

Sand Cat - This one was my favorite.

it's FUNKY FRIDAY!!! Kickin' it Root Down...

I bought the Beastie Boys Paul's Boutique years and years ago and bought Ill Communication right after it came out. There is some awesome sampling going on as I heard tracks from Jimmy Smith's Root Down to Curtis Mayfield's Superfly. I was hooked! So here is my tribute to funky friday remembering all those funksters who contributed to making the Beastie Boys who they are...I am sure they will admit and cite that their hip hop roots were definitely influenced by great funk/soul music. I salute all of those that laid down the funk so we could move our JUNK!

Dancing Midget...and Boy Omega!

This blew my mind. I couldn't believe someone of such little stature could be doing something so awesomely big. This freaks me out more than the devil himself. If you get past this freakiness, you will see that it's pure genius. Indian midget popping to Holiday Rap.

And in other news...those of you who do not know Boy Omega need to know. I discovered him a few years ago while scouring the internet and I love everything that he has done. His voice? hmmmmmm who does it remind me of??? Robert Smith perhaps? YES!

Best worst fight scene...EVER...

This takes the cake. Hands down best worst fight scene ever.

And this might be the best worst cover EVER! Cap'n Jazz freaking rocks. I love them so much. They are everything that is good about music. After they disbanded, several of the members of this band went on to be a part of some great music.

The LA eating trip...and the korean bbq...mmmmmm

I am told by my korean friends up here in the bay area that in order to get korean bbq, you need to go to LA. So the wife and I headed down to Manna BBQ on a recommendation. All you can eat for $16.99. We didn't even get past the initial plate of meat. I was so stuffed at the end of the meal that I got Itis. Definition of Itis:

1. the Itis:

The general feeling of lethargy and well-being experienced after eating a satisfying meal. This phenomena is particularly triggered by foods high in carbohydrates and meats containing the amino acid tryptophan.

"_I got the itis so bad after the Thanksgiving meal I just chilled on the couch and watched some movies._"

So here is what was on the menu that initiated Itis:

-Thinly sliced beef brisket
-Beef short ribs
-BBQ marinated pork
-BBQ marinated beef
-BBQ marinated chicken
-Pork belly (bacon)

And you can't forget about all the little dishes of "pan chan". These include kim chee, potato salad, jap chae (noodles)...the list goes on. I was in heaven!

I am still working this meal off and it has been a couple of days. I used to be able to pack away the meat back when I was in high school and into college. My 31 year old body is now telling me the veggies are the way to go. Fiber is my friend.

Sunday Covers...on Monday...Jejune - The Boy With The Thorn In His Side

I am lame. I went to LA for the weekend and totally missed out on MOG! I come back to find my inbox filled with unread MOGs. Outrage! I am still combing through all the emails and man it's going to take me a while. I would love to drop a line to everyone on my trusted list, but it's going to be hard. I will honestly try my darndest.

So the first time I heard this band Jejune it was a suggestion from a friend because they covered a Smiths song. Of course I was totally skeptical, but once I heard the rendition, I was hooked on the band. It is so sad that I discovered them a little too late as they broke up in 2000. Get back to together and please please please let me get what I want...this time.

I have been listening to this cd quite a bit, and these German indie rockers know whats up. I've been hitting up some of their older stuff and it's just awesome. I have not a clue what they are up to and if they are up for another album. These guys are becoming a favorite of mine.

Carrie Akre, a rediscovery in progress...

I can see it now, they were pounding on her door...they wanted her to get into the studio again. I know this much, you can't contain the voice of Carrie Akre. There will be none of that. Is this a reintroduction to the new Carrie Akre? I don't know. Her songs are still filled with lyrics of angst and unappreciated love. But there is something different and maybe it's time that has fostered this
contrast. I believe this to be the true Carrie Akre, the one she wants her audience to feel and hear. Most of the tracks on this album are produced with a mentality that less is more and I attribute this success to her surrounding cast of accomplished musicians and producer.

There is no doubt that Carrie was going be supported by comrades from her musically native Pacific Northwest buddies. Steve Fisk helps produce this album and also rounds out the sound with various keyboard parts throughout the album. He's produced everything from bands like Minus the Bear, Low, The Screaming Trees, to co-leading the band Pigeonhed with Shawn Smith of Brad and Satchel fame. It's no wonder that he sanctioned Mark Pickerel to drum duties for Carrie's album. It's worthy to note the work Johnny Sangster, Danny Newcomb, and Jared Clifton put out as well. Carrie is no slouch on her instruments to say the least. The song that did me in was the very last song on this album. It's a beautiful song of confession and regret. But wait...there's a hidden track right after the song..."Dear John" seems to extend the chorus of "Secret" when Carrie sings..."and somehow I'll come through tonight." In a way it's a fitting end to the disc with a hidden track of Carrie singing a raw B side sounding simple tune.

Thanks to greekdiner for hooking this cd up. She happened to contact me after my Hammerbox post. She works for the Planetary Group based out of Boston who happens to be supporting Carrie's new album. Stop by and say hello to her.

New Wave Wednesday...Then Jerico!

Keep your mixtape suggestions coming. I am working on several playlists for the salon and I am positive that the songs on there are going to be eclectic and fun. It's going to take me a little time to sift through the songs and put them in an order that makes sense. I always feel each track should have a purpose in where they are placed, especially on a mixtape.

Then Jerico. This band reminds me of everything that happened during the summer of 1989. I went off to this month long camp at an all-boy boarding school called Kiski about an hour east of Pittsburgh. It was like a scene taken from Stand By Me, where a band of young lads came together and discovered who they were as we laughed and cried together, fought and broke bread with one another...and shared our music with one another. INXS, Tone Loc, New Order, Then Jerico, Alphaville...the list goes on. Memories will never fade.

The Mog Salon Mix: Send in Your Suggestions!

I have a friend who owns a salon in Palo Alto and she loves playing her favorite cds for background music. I volunteered to help her put together some mixes for the salon with a mixture of upbeat, dancey, hip, sometimes mellow, sometimes 80's, and lots of mog. That's right...I am going to make her a mog mix. Right now she is playing everything from Rilo Kiley to Ministry (from her mod days) to Thievery Corp. A great mixture of stuff, but she keeps telling me that there are times when she needs more new music. Seriously 9+ hours of some of the same cds can get old in a weeks time.

Here's where you guys get involved, I am going to put together several mixes for her and I need your suggestions. I will put your mog identity right next to the song when I make her playlists...and that's only if you want me to. This is going to be fun and I can't wait to hear all the awesome suggestions! Make more than 1 suggestion if you want, actually please do! I am looking for everything as well...slowcore to techno! It's up to you!

Bleach - Shoegazers!!!

Not to be confused with the christian pop punk group Bleach. This is the UK shoegaze band that put out one record in the early 90's. You can typically find this cd for DIRT cheap at any used record store. I think I paid 50 cents for this cd so I bought both copies for a buck. I always buy multiple copies at that price because I can always give the cd away to a friend with similar musical taste.

I really like the whole disc and recommend it to many moggers here who enjoy shoegaze.

Top 3 bands you want to see live before you die...

These are my top 3 bands that I want to see before I die. Obviously I will never get to see the Smiths on stage because a reunion will NEVER happen. But these might happen...

1. New Order - I have never seen them live. I know that Hooky is in some kind of rift with his former bandmates, but I think they might work things out. There is still too much music in them to not as a band.

2. Radiohead - This one is obvious. I missed them the last time they came to San Francisco. I even had the chance to get tickets for cheap!!! BLASTED! I am this will happen someday.

3. Ryan Adams - This will definitely happen unless he decides to call it quits...which I doubt. The dude puts out so much music in such a short amount of time. Again I missed him 3 times when he was in the area. What the heck was I thinking?

I am sure many of you have seen these bands. What are your top 3??? And Happy Thanksgiving to all you Americans!

Red House Painters - Songs For a Blue Guitar

I felt like listening to something mellow, but also had a pulse running through it to keep my attention. Maybe it's the cold weather sinking into my skin, although out here in the west coast cold is nothing like it is elsewhere. I am reminded time and again that I need to sometimes stop and listen. This song brings me to a place where I can detox from the constant rush from my everyday life. I am slowly getting back into music that reflects the more intimate side of my personality.
Duncan Sheik Covers the Smiths...Reel Around the Fountain

This very controversial song being covered by Duncan Sheik. I was surprised when I first heard this rendition. This done almost in the vein of Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want, it's so subtle and intimate. The song itself is extremely disturbing once you listen to it's lyrics. One may mistake it for a simple love song because of Marr's ability to create such romantic music, but Morrissey's lyrics pierce through the song like a nail through plywood.

<ins>Reel Around the Fountain</ins>

It's time the tale were told
Of how you took a child
And you made him old

It's time the tale were told
Of how you took a child
And you made him old
You made him old

Reel around the fountain
Slap me on the patio
I'll take it now
Oh ...

Fifteen minutes with you
Well, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people said that you were virtually dead
And they were so wrong

Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, well, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people said that you were easily led
And they were half-right
Oh, they ... oh, they were half-right, oh

It's time the tale were told
Of how you took a child
And you made him old
It's time that the tale were told
Of how you took a child
And you made him old
You made him old

Oh, reel around the fountain
Slap me on the patio
I'll take it now
Ah ... oh ...

Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
Oh, but I do.
Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
I do.
Oh, I ... oh, I do
Oh ...

I dreamt about you last night
And I fell out of bed twice
You can pin and mount me like a butterfly
But "take me to the haven of your bed"
Was something that you never said
Two lumps, please
You're the bee's knees
But so am I

Oh, meet me at the fountain
Shove me on the patio
I'll take it slowly
Oh ...

Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
Oh, but I do.
Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, no, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
I do.
Oh, I ... I do
Oh, I do
Oh, I do
Oh, I do

Neil Finn covers The Smiths

I've always loved everything Neil Finn. I love this cover of "There is a Light That Never Goes Out". I feel Neil sings it his own way on this tune. Notice how he screws the chorus up a bit with some flipped lyrics, but it doesn't bother me too much. It's also no secret that Johnny Marr frequents the stage with Neil on his tours and also in the studio as the two of them have remained great friends through the years. I promised myself I would see him live one day. Let's hope that happens!

Sorry folks, I had to do it again...the WORST COVERS EVER!!!

OK, now hear me out. At first I thought this was a joke. Several years ago a friend of mine sent me this and I thought for sure it was just a huge joke. There is no way that an elderly chinese lady would be doing covers like ACDC, The Carpenters, Mariah Carey... At first it sounded like Adam Sandler punking everybody. What I found out is that this is 100% real. There is a lady named Wing Han Tsang who sings. And she is AWFUL!

Check out the tunes...(cringes)

The worst cover in the WORLD!!!

This has got to be the worst cover EVER!!! I don't know how to describe what I am feeling. I cannot believe that this is allowed to happen. This should be banned!

Back to the 80's with Bizarre Orkeztra!!!

These guys are pretty obscure. I don't have much info on them but I was wondering if anyone remembers them at all? Where do bands like this go?

I could only find a myspace page for them.

http://www.myspace.com/bizarreorkeztra

Another band that fell into the cracks is Blue Zoo and they were awesome. Totally fell off the face of the earth though. And I know if there is any place in the world to go to see if people remember or have any recollection of any obscure bands...it's going to MOG. I love you guys!

* * * Stars * * * @ Bimbo's 365 Club 11/14/07

This was going to be my first time seeing Stars and the anticipation was wearing me out. Seriously, all day at work all I could think about were all the Amy Millan and Torquil Campbell duets I was going to hear that night. It's pretty safe to say that I wasn't going to be disappointed. The only concern of the night was WHERE THE HECK I WAS GOING TO FIND PARKING???

Snagged a spot about 6 blocks away and headed towards Bimbo's. The night was unusually warm for SF this time of year. Anyone agree with me? Bay area peeps?

I missed the first half of Lloyd Cole's set, but caught some of his wonderful opening tunes with just him and his acoustic guitar. At one point the noise level in the audience was starting to grow and in the middle of his song he smirked and said "I could play softer if you like." It was all in good flavor and he seemed to have quite a following at Bimbo's.

After Lloyd's set ended I made my way up stage right where it was getting packed as I was getting crammed right up against this huge subwoofer. I positioned myself and my camera for...STARS!

Can I just say this, Amy Millan freaking rocks!

There were times during the set that I was in awe of the quality of musicianship of this band. They played a smattering of tunes from "Set Yourself on Fire" and "In Our Bedrooms after the War" which delighted the crowd. I always love bands who have great dynamics to their set, where they can rise and fall with emotion. This band puts it out there as they can whisper or shout their message to the audience. I was a little concerned how they would come out especially since it was their second night at Bimbo's. Were they going to come out flat? or sparkle a bit more. I don't know how the previous night was, but this was definitely a huge sparkle. Maybe even fireworks. They genuinely seemed to have tons of fun on stage, playing with the audience, engaging each other in musical banter, taking a page from the Smiths and throwing carnations out into the crowd...although I would have enjoyed gladiolas but that may be too Smiths for them.

Things got really cooking when they played "Soft Revolution". I was glad to hear they were going to play songs off of "Set Yourself on Fire". Although I enjoy their newest effort, I felt a closer bond to this album. Maybe it was the fact that I only had their newest disc for a couple of weeks, but I felt a more complete connection to Set Yourself. I don't necessarily feel a decline in anything, it is just personal preference. What's in store for this band? What does the future bring? This is a supergroup and I feel that big things are in store for many of them individually if it hasn't already happened. I hope they come to San Francisco once again. Canada is just too far for me.

If there is a band to see live, I would recommend seeing Stars if you are given the chance. They are pure entertainment in the simplest of words. There is no need to sit around and wonder if it's worth it...it most definitely is.

Who remembers Hammerbox? Grunger unknowns?

I remember picking up the album "Numb" on tape when it first came out. I had a friend who worked at Tower Records and he immediately
