Before any show there must be eats. We did that at Frjtz on Valencia to fuel up on fried stuff and killer sandwiches. The wife and I finished our meal and headed towards the GAMH to meet up with D. We were there early enough to be the first in line so we grabbed our tickets and headed straight in. D told me he had called MattP to put us down on "the list" and we were able to grab Chris the tour manager. Dan Crowell was the first to greet us to take us into their room.
My wife whispers to me, "he looks like Garth". Totally dude. The boys were all on their Mac Powerbooks...there must have been at least 5 laptops all fully powered.
I kept thinking to myself...gee Matt the bass player looks like MEENO PELUCE from VOYAGERS!!! Holla if you remember. meeno peluce PA coming to a venue near you.

Fun moments before she goes on...she asked my wife to zip her up her newspaper dress. My thoughts on her set:
Jesca Hoop, what a sweetheart. I understand where the Tom Waits influence comes from and I applaud her for putting herself in a position to be compared to a talent like Waits. Her vocals are outstanding and the best quality of her musicianship is her impecable timing and dynamics. She is really special and it was a treat to spend an evening with her and the band. I have to give props to her crew who impressed me on several different levels. As a musician, I understand the roles of every part and counterpart to a band that plays diverse music which relies heavily on a mixture of organic and electronic instruments. There were some extremely intense moments, but most of the set was intimate and beautiful. I could definitely see her music backing up something like Cirque Du Soleil. It would definitely fit the context and would match the creativity and the textural sounds would lend so well to a visual. I hope the general public understands what she is becoming and that is someone who is willing to push the boundaries of a couple of genres of music.
mpPA took the stage at around 9:30 and the place was starting to buzz with excitement. The front of the place was getting packed with fans.
They played a mixture of older songs while tying in tunes from their newest. Last Light might be their finest work to date after hearing it for the past 2 days non-stop. I am convinced that these guys will somehow gain more attention as they put out such great records.

Highlights of the night for me came when they were back onstage for an encore. "New Hampshire" is one of those songs that brings out the emotions of the past. They seriously played it with such haunting presence. I could feel the venue closing in on each lyric as Matt seemed to pour out his heart to the crowd. At one point he did touch his heart and left us all wondering which one he felt...the wounded heart? or the heart that has healed. A very powerful moment while he sang us into the San Francisco night.
