MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Artist:

Hey out there,

I really shouldn't be doing this since I have an exam tomorrow at 9:00 AM on Archaeology (incase anyone was interested) but everyone needs a break, right? (Or just an outlet)

So here's mine for now. I'll start by saying the first concert I ever went to was a Sum 41 concert for my 14th birthday at the Hershey Center, Mississauga (2002).

I requested tickets and they came to my house very quickly, thank-you ticketmaster. I went with maybe 6 other friends, all girls, and maybe 2 of which actually knew any of the songs.

I'm pretty sure the first band that came on was called H2O. I'm not sure what they are up to these days but when I heard them it sounded to me like they were still figuring out how they wanted to sound and to get their skills up. I did not make a note to check them out afterwards but I've heard the band name around in radio announcements (mostly for fronting other bands) and mentions here in there in online articles. It's good they're still at it.

Next up was Killswitch Engage. They were better, but didn't have Sum 41's style, which was probably good because it gave the crowd a chance to really enjoy Sum 41's unique energy afterwards. Killswitch (at the time) sounded like more of an alternative-band-exploring-this-new-genre-called-screamo. I also haven't checked in on them lately but it'll be interesting to hear if they've really perfected what they sounded like they were going for some 6 years ago!

Then of course Sum 41. Great entrance and of course I loved it since they were in my top 3 favourite bands at the time. They played one or two songs and I decided to meet up with one of my friends who had floor tickets. They decided to sneak two of us in (not really sneaking, we just ran past and away from the chasing ticketmen and disappeared into the crowd).

It was an unreal experience I'll never forget and probably has something to do with why I'll never get tired of rock. I went right to the first mosh pit I could find and just let loose. Of course, teen angst was playing its course at the time so that really let me connect. I kept making people lift me up (probably annoying the hell out of people at the same time) so I could crowd surf constantly. I couldn't get enough. Let's just say it was close to a euphoric drug experience.

Now that I'm a little older I've had the time to indulge in other bands, some related to Sum 41, specifically the ones that influenced them in the first place.

Does anyone remember the Pain For Pleasure music video? I remember seeing that in my prime Sum 41 13-year-old fan days and thinking 'what the fuck'......now I understand hahha. The bands that birthed that scene will make an appearance in upcoming posts of course.

So after this post I guess I'll get into the other bands that I got into afterwards and concerts experiences that fueled my Appetite. For Destruction, that is.

Everyone remembers their first concert (well, if they weren't too wasted) - good story. You should check out Killswitch Engage again!
