One of my favorite records so far this year has been The Dead Will Walk, Dear by The National Lights. Has anyone else been enjoying it? I was surprised to see how few listeners they have on Last.fm. The music is bright and summer-y. But the lyrics? Murder ballads.
Here's part of "Better For It, Kid"
Let me cover you up in my button flannel shirt Your skin's so cold without a skirt on
Let me cut your cheek and catch the blood before it falls
'Cause it'll dirty up your feet
Don't make me say I'm sorry
'Cause in my heart I meant no harm
I'll help you sit up in our bed And fold your arms, 'cause they'll be tired From all the praying that you did
The light of day will just bake your skin
And only heaven knows for sure
Exactly what it is we did
Creeeeeeeeeepyyyyyyyyy. The music is catchy, but it's that disconnect between the music and the lyrics that keeps drawing me back.
