I've been listening to a lot of things since my last post on MOG.Bill Holt's Dreamies. As the story goes, this guy quit his Fortune 500 company office job to make weird experimental music. The story goes that he was fed up with the Vietnam war. The thing is, this sounds eerily reminiscent of Olivia Tremor Control, but made 20 years prior.I think I've fallen in love with the Marie Antoinette Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. It's just great, like Sophia Coppola's mixtape to Marie. And listening to Marie has lead me to The Radio Dept. who've got the breezily perfect song "Pulling Our Weight" on that soundtrack. The DAT Politics album Wow Twist is really rubbing me the right way. Just listen to "Gravity" or "My Toshiba Is Alive." That's some make-you-freak-out-and-dance shit.It took me this long, for some reason, to get Raymond Scott's Manhattan Research compilation. It's got all his weird commercials and experiments, which prompted my girlfriend to ask, "Was Raymond Scott a crazy person?" I have to admit, I don't know, after hearing so many strange electronic burps, gleeps, and sproings in the name of advertising Auto-Lite, Baltimore Gas and Bendix. J Dilla sampled the superb "Lightworks" and I know The Kleptones used "The Paperwork Explosion" on something. And...Oh, my.... "Wheels That Go"....... is what my podcast's theme song is sampled from!! I never knew! My mind was just blown. I guess I am late to the game since Thomas did that in 2003 or so. This ties in nicely. We are thinking of replacing the theme song to Radio Free Marist and possibly the name of the show, and I was thinking how a Raymond Scott tune might work well for a theme. We already had one! This is ridiculous. This is my ninth to last post on MOG . The next post will be in 21 days.
