1992...summer fun...
With the marriage of hip-hop & dance-hall, came the birth of a new sound for the proverbial bass-head to cruise with, and this was definatley a hot, must have record...
...don't have many casettes from 'back in the day'...still have this casette single though.

Another outstanding, and smoothe title- track + a super cool line-up of groovers and tunes--gotta sample "Lost Dreams" too!...more to come

George Cables helps Freddie with the arrangements, and plays some very nice electric piano and keyboards on the album -- making for a smooth, tight, and nicely spacey batch of 70s soul jazz that proves that not every move to a major label was a bad one. © 1996-2008, Dusty Groove America, Inc.

Released 1975
Genre: Jazz-Rock
Length: 44min 33sec

Producer: Freddie Hubbard
featuring: George Cables, Carl Burnett, Carl Randall Jr., Ray Parker, Henry Franklin, Chuck Rainey, Al Hall, Ian Underwood, Spider Webb, Myuto Correa and Johnny Guitar Watson.

Hot Sake

Produced by Creed Taylor
Arranged by Lalo Schifrin
Recorded in New York City April 23rd, 24th and 25th--1963

This recording is really great, i just had to post it, and Hot Sake is in the same key as my gong...more Freddie to come. I picked this up sometime in the mid 90's and really enjoy it. When I bought it, verve was featuring a double disk, which contained Breeze From The East-And Several Shades of Jade By, Cal Tjader also....A whopping 20 some eastern influenced tracks of great jazz.

ALTERNATE REVIEW:
This Album has a Far, Middle and Near East theme running through it. The arrangements and production are very adventurous for the time. Lalo Schifrin is very evident on this Album and his unique style is rapidly taking form. Most of the Schifrin arrangements have a filmic quality to them. This could easily be a soundtrack album.

"The Fakir" is pure Schifrin with the percussion taking the driving seat. "Song of Yellow River" has a great Bass line that has real charge to it. "Sahib" is brilliant with it's lazy groove and fantastic drumming by Eddie Shaughnessy. "China Nights" is an example of great mellow jazz. The final track on the Album "Hot Sake" is Lalo doing what he does best.

Side One

1. The Fakir
2. Cherry Blossoms
3. Borneo
4. Tokyo Blues

Side Two

1. Song Of Yellow river
2. Sahib
3. China Nights (Shina No Yuro)
4. Almond Tree
5. Hot Sake

1974 -- Sweet electric Freddie! ...and mellow Freddie too. Also some heavy duty funk in the background. The funky backings are by Dale Oehler, who's conducting a larger group behind a core quintet that has some excellent reeds by Junior Cook, and some killer electric piano by George Cables! Cables really makes the set cook, and Freddie picks up a lot of tone from him on the record.

2. Black Maybe
3. Baraka Sasa
4. Crisis
5. Ebony Moonbeams

Sandworms

...been listening to CTI stuff sizzle since the mid 90's, when a friend presented me with a live hollywood bowl concert lp...i was hooked--and my life would never be the same! This is some outstanding work from some of the tightest, most brilliant cti players that graced the label--
more...

from Blaxploitation:
No, it's not the soundtrack to the movie Dune ( by AOR favorites Toto). This one compromises disco-style covers of parts of John Williams' Star Wars suite. So what else is on the album? Is it funky? You're damn right it is. Any self-respecting jazz funk fan would start to quiver when faced with the session musician lineup on this concept LP---players: Andy Newmark and Steve Gadd on drums, Randy Brecker and Jon Faddis in the horns, Grover Washington and David Sanborn (well, OK...) on sax. This obscure CTI album is the source of the killer sample cut 'Sandworms', as used on several major-league hip-hop tracks. Forget the rest of the (mainly disco-esque) cuts and head for Sandworms. It's funkier than a mosquito's tweeter (as Nina Simone once sang) and will blow the roof off your bass bins!

Overall Rating: 4

From babygrandpa & Doug Payne:
'Dune', is based on the novel by Frank Herbert. Doug Payne gives us some interesting information on this issue: "The jacket of CTI 7-5005 indicates the 'Dune' suite is based on Frank Herbert's novel 'Dune'. However, producer Creed Taylor had not secured the author's authorization as the thematic source for the album. Herbert later filed suit against CTI and won, forcing the album to be withdrawn from distribution. Any future issue of the recording requires the authorization of Frank Herbert". This probably explains why there's never been a re-release of the album, except for Japan, where 'Dune' has been re-released on CD in '94 or '96. (Maybe Pekis can help us with that sometime!). The one track that I can't stop listening to is 'Sandworms'. The bassline played by Gary King keeps haunting you and gives it a real science fiction feel. Of course there's the 'Theme From Star Wars', which is also very famous amongst beat diggers. Especially the first four tracks which form the 'Dune Suite', remind us a bit of 'La Planète Sauvage' by Alain Goraguer. 'Dune' is a superb tour de force and a must for every CTI/KUDU fan. On Doug Payne's website you can find extensive info about the production and the fabulous session players.

i dig this sound, it reminds me of an Axelrod recording at times...
...Recorded in 1971, shortly after he departed Cadet Records in Chicago where he served as a prime sideman to both Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler, guitarist Phil Upchurch headed for the West Coast and Blue Thumb Records. Produced by Tommy LiPuma, Upchurch's Darkness, Darkness is his quintessential (double) album, full of laid-back funky grooves, elegant, mind-blowing guitar work, and in-the-pocket string and horn arrangements (as well as some fine Fender Rhodes work) from Donny Hathaway with legendary session bassist Chuck Rainey and smooth jazz piano great Joe Sample in the house.

Mr. Gone (aka: Simon T. Bramley and Co.) have been producing sounds for quite some time! Simon is 1/3 of "Afro Elements" and bassist for the incredible, "Down To The Bone", He's worked with such artists as, Jeff Lorber(fusion), and Eddie Henderson. I was introduced to the elusive Mr. Gone about a year ago. Simon zipped me a few final products(promo's) from his recent sessions, and even shared some of his personal favorite Hancock & Caldera cuts, which are pretty tight too(i'll post them later)....So, check it out, ~Come Fly With Me ** Mr. Gone

A Taste Of Bass

Rooted in the Sound System scene in London but aware of hardcore underground music scenes world wide including techno, punk and noise, they endorse protest through music as well as other means!
Using bass and delay as their primary instruments of protest they build intense, minimal dubs, which hypnotise, en-trance and inspire. With musical inspirations ranging from Jah Shaka to Ash Ra Tempel, a new distinctive sound continues to develop at every new recording session.

This debut Power Steppers LP was conceived after early Power Steppers tracks had great attention from the Lead With the Bass compilation, also released on Universal Egg (WWLP/CD008). The album features collaborations with both the Disciples (Precision Device) and the Ruts DC (Bass Communication) and tracks from the album were featured on the Power Steppers EP (eggy009) and the Power Steppers meets Disciples EP (eggy011). The album as a whole is a collection of uptempo, electronic, hi steppers - dubwise.

Tracklist and Credits:
1) A Taste of Bass
2) Precision Device
3) Bass Exploration
4) Bass Communication
5) Liberty, Power and Bass
6) His Master's Bass
7) The Race Into Bass
8) Active Speaker
9) Any Bass Necesarry
10)Bass Expectations

all tracks written by Guy Sturgeon, produced by Zion Train at the Wibbly Wobbly World of Music

This is Nina Hagen recording the track,
Divine Love, Sex, And Romance. From the album, Street.

...Picked this up (used import) in L.A.---It's a little dated, yet breathtakingly energizing and fun. STREET released in 1991 is far more poppier than a good many of the German recordings from Hagen. She also released an "all standards" jazz album a few years ago.

Nina is from Germany and a resident of Los Angeles. She is a regular performer
at The Key Club in W. Hollywood, Ca.

Sub Signals is a new series for Interchill Records, initiated by Gaudi, label head Andrew Ross Collins and Nick Edell. Following on from a number of compilation forays into the liminal points between dub, psy dub, psy dancehall and dubby breaks [Talisman & Dissolving Clouds compilations] it was decided to launch a series that would appeal to dub reggae purists and low end bass freaks as well as fans of cross-over sounds. The Sub Signal music policy is rooted in deep universal beats, defined and unified by Bass.
