At least 4 good tracks, including 2 hard rockin' fuzz-drenched numbers non-comped as yet, can be found on the 1966 Try Too Hard album by Dave Clark Five. "Somebody Find A New Love" starts off with a decent drum roll proving (maybe) that they could actually play the drums.

Try Too Hard is on that best-of CD I own, but not that second cut. And I've been wanting to see that DC5 vs Beatles mag cover for some time. At the time it created a bit of anger in my 15-year old mind that the two could be considered in any way equal. Time has, of course, borne that out.

Wow Unca Creepy - what massive frontal lobes you have! You must already know what I am thinking...

MoreMoose, you got the joke... and are well learned at seeing "pictures within pictures" as ol' Dr. Wertham warned.
Dehrmark, here's the other fuzz rocker off of Try Too Hard.
Me too, at the time, noticed the DC5 vs. them stuff with an sense of it being a sham battle.
My 10 year old mind had more than enough room for all the then new hit groups, whether US or British (that was as diversified as top 40 radio was in '64).
The (square) American media at the time was constantly trying to pronounce The Beatles were through, and had testimonials from pre-schoolers (or slightly older) that now it was Herman's Hermits.
They underestimated the talent of all the bands, and supressed so much great stuff inadvertantly that there remains a treasure trove of under-played gems from that (and other) era.

That last track kind of got on my nerves. Sounded like a band trying to sound like Dave Clark 5. Those other two I liked though. Dave Clark has some fun tracks. Definitely no Beatles though. That magazine cover is heelarious. The "30 Summer Fun Hand Bags" seems out of place. I also wonder just what the DC5 and the Stones were saying about each other. Cool post Uncle Creepy. I also like your massive lobes. Can you read minds with that? Reminds me of somehting out of EC comics.

Well said, Fistula. That last track does wear out it's welcome fast.
Not sure what The Stones and DC5 said about each other.
I recall The Beatles regarded The Searchers as contemporary contenders (recommending them when asked who they thought were good peer groups, in '63 - '64) and later The Beatles admired The Stones (whom they got along with privately); but DC5 were a joke to The Beatles. Maybe not to Brian Epstein, since DC5 did cut into the overall profit potential. Several British beat bands (by '66) had to go elsewhere (Germany mainly) to ply theri trade... simply no more room in jam-packed UK for all the groups.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but basically DC5 were a vanity group... they were already independently wealthy, such as having their own private jet while The Beatles were then flying coach (or by '64, 1st class, but on commercial airlines).
I've got an extensive collection of TV shows featuring beat bands from the '60s, and DC5 never played live on any of them. Perhaps they were loyal to the sound they could only perfect in the studio and were wary of sounding thin.
Not even the mikes were turned on (with the backing tracks playing) as was often done then or miming to a performance cut live earlier that day for TV appearences.
The DC5 did have some great tracks, of course. Some quite decent ('67-'69) ones they did like "Inside & Out" and "Maze Of Love" were not as well known in the US.
Yes, I had the opposite of a frontal lobotomy. Botox/collagen in this large of a quanity is quite expensive tho. Side affects include having a sixth finger (12 in all). EC does it! Or Daystar Productions.
