BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

(39)

The Three O'Clock was for a time the top pop-psych-o-paisley band, from 1982 'til around 1985.

I saw them play The Stone in SF a few times in 1984, really good shows. Their support band at one was The Bangles and the door was only $5 but a lot of us got in free by winning tix from the college radio station KUSF donated by the band for free ads on the low watt broadcasts. Practically half the audience was comped for doing little favors or by being the +1 of someone who did.

The band gave us even more cheap thrills by playing for free on the Bandshell in Golden Gate Park, at 3:00 one sunny afternoon!

But what was happening at the time were the hair bands in spandex... the majority of the youngest club goers were mad after those generic hairballs that nobody remembers today.

So with few exceptions such as REM most of the innovators went largely unwanted by the hair chasers and criminally unnoticed by the majors.

Very few of the cool live shows were videotaped or even audio taped in the early 80's. There were no cell phone cams then. No one thought to bring even a Kodak Brownie to the Bandshell let alone a Walkman. We were having too much fun to imagine our little scene wouldn't last.

Good times gone.

Somewhere in the world, befour, during and after all... it's Three O'Clock.

I like this. I was a bit afraid that it was a cover of the David Crosby tune from the third (?) Byrds album, which has the same song title. Thankfully, that wasn't the case.

Of course, the logical extension is the Four O'Clock Balloon. Amazingly enough, there have been two bands with this name: a 60s psych band, which sucked, and a fabulous 1990s powerpop band who only released one CD. I've mogged about them, but good luck finding that, as MOG can't find the post, probably due to the apostrophe in their name.

They certainly had the graphic style of the era down. In fact, that example with the babe in the helmet is more fully realized than a lot of the authentic stuff.

Very nice. Over the weekend I downloaded the Sixteen Tambourines/Baroque Hoedown discs from iTunes. The Three O'Clock never got the recognition they deserved. I never tire of singing their praises.
