A trip with Skip

Posted almost 2 years ago
According to Moby Grape member Peter Lewis, "Seeing" is not only Skip Spence's finest songwriting effort, but also Moby Grape's most realized recording. He probably didn't mean the early take, but it's worth hearing. 2 other versions are currently in & out of print on various releases.Meanwhile, allow me to digress from the complications involving their back catalog. I double-dated two nice gals with Skip Spence about 13 years ago.One of the women was Skip's girlfriend and also his weekend caretaker, as he was only allowed out with supervision. The idea being to keep Skippy away from drugs and beer.Even so, he drank at least 10 iced teas until the pizzeria manager had a shit fit when Skip began bolting from our table towards the counter in a hurry to refill his glass. Keeping her eyes on the road while driving, his girlfriend casually diffused the hysterical laughing going on in conversations he was having (with himself) in the back seat), by saying a few times, "Skip's a trip," which made him laugh all the more. Every now and then Skip had moments of clarity. He pointed out a Victorian flat where he and Paul Kantner were roomates (in 1966) as we drove by. I suddenly got his attention when I praised his solo album.Making me feel my opinion really mattered to him, he asked what song on OAR I liked the best. What do you say to such a legendary loon? Uncle Creepy, no doubt, was right at home in such company.

  1. dermahrk says Ok, NOW I'm jealous, big-time. I'm frankly surprised to hear that Skip HAD a keeper and a place to stay 13 years ago. I was under the impression from things I read on the (since-shut-down-by-Matthew-Katz-professional-asswipe) Moby Grape website around that period that Skippy was homeless and alcoholic. Though I hate to disagree with Peter, I think Skip's contributions to that first Grape LP outshine ??Seeing??. I think that he was the creative sparkplug that made that first LP so wonderful, and his subsequent sudden decline was what spoiled it for MG. Regardless, I still collect any and all MG and solo releases to capture a bit more of that lightning in a bottle.

  2. dermahrk says This cut is off of the new Sundazed version of ??Wow??, yes? I own all of the new Sundazed re-releases *except the first LP*. At the time I thought, well, I have all of these songs anyway. By the time I got around to deciding I wanted to buy it for the remastering, M-K-P-A had filed his lawsuit and the first three CDs were removed from sale. That first CD now goes on Ebay, on a daily basis, for about $80. I am just too cheap to drop that dime for re-mastering alone, so I guess I will wait and hope that M-K-P-A loses his suit and the CDs are reissued.
