TestosterStones: Tell me, musically what is the finest era of The Rolling Stones?
Okay, buddah bing, I gotta say the Brian Jones thing is the thing. We got the zing of dulcimers, the sting of dobros, the marimba vibes and a wailin' sitar paintin' our rage in wood so black its purple majesties cut deeper than the plunk of Rubber Soul.
Better than my opinion, in my humble opinion, is the rave reaction received from legendary San Francisco rock 'n' roller, Cyril Jordan (currently with Clem Burke [of Blondie] and Eddie Munoz [from The Plimsouls] in the semi-super freakbeat band, Magic Christian; 2004 Goldie Award winner [SFBG]; founder of the Flamin' Groovies whose longevity [1965-1992] outlasted all the other S.F. bands who started in the mid-'60s except for the Grateful Dead).
Cyril noted that the guitar break on this non-vocal version is much better than - though it's very similar to - the track on Between The Buttons.
And that it's a fully realized Brian Jones arrangement.
The instrumentation is pure Jones comin' down. (I dunno... maybe Keith had more to do with arrangements of the '66-'67 Stones sessions than Brian did, save for brilliant and long unreleased sessions such as this one).
But Cyril is usually right about musicology, and the notion of Brian's importance to and influence on the Stones enduring with vitality into the 1967 psychedelic period, still stirring the crock pot into wresting control away from the erstwhile leader of the band is a more flowery view of The Stones anyway.
Who wants yesterday's papers?
