WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

...but becoming one as we speak. Oberst and Co's new record is currently rocking, errr folking, my world. The standard's been kicked up another notch, kids. The songs are so strong, they're actually digging out my ears. I never could get into the older records for some reason - too dylanesque for me - but this one has me itching to for it. Plus he's the same age as me, which is kind of a subtle reminder that I need to get back into making music again.

  1. brickbat says i find oberst just sort of unsettling, probably for the reason most people do, he's got nothing to mope about, and he mopes about everything. then again, this isn't a bad track, and i fell face first into digital ash in a digital urn (and then didn't listen to it after that month and a half of constant spin), maybe its not that i don't like him, so much as he doesn't have staying power with me. i dunno. see, now i have to think about this. le sigh.

  2. tybees says He's one of those artists whose work I unintentionally dismiss just because his voice is so, I dunno, invasive....I can certainly appreciate good lyrics, but in the past he's seemed to put more emphasis on what he's saying rather than the ??music?? that's behind it. I know I'm not alone whan I say that I hear the music first, then give the words some attention. This record seems to balance the best of both worlds.

  3. Rawkkiddoh says Never knew what the hype was about until I heard the song Bowl of Oranges, since then I have been hooked. Not really sure what it is with this band, but I dont question. I think its the way his music tells a story, and he does it well.

  4. jameson says see, I'm not really liking the newest album, but I really, admittedly, haven't given it a lot of chance. I will at some point, and I'll most likely retract my original statement about my thoughts on the album. Comparing "cassadaga" to the likes of "lifted..." or "I'm wide awake" at this point, is like comparing apples and oranges to me, in terms of feeling, power and angst: all things that made his previous albums effective.

  5. tybees says I listened to I’m Wide Awake all the way through once or twice and that’s as much as I could really stand. But, my tastes are always changing…maybe I should go back and re-visit the older stuff and see what comes of it…
