WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Download Binge Pt V, Final

Posted over 3 years ago
Healthier than cheese whiz, less aggrivating than your neighbor, and as satisfying as watching someone trip - here's the last installment of my 7 day download binge:............................................................................................................................*Beck* - ??The Information?? (recommended by no one in particular, I just thought I'd give it a shot)-ehhh- -whelming- worth a few spins -you gotta hear this- -buy this now!-+Tracks 1-3+:"Elevator Music" kicks things off with a killer beat, much like "E-Pro" opened ??Guero??. The next two songs are kinda boring. Not boring as in "watching paint dry", more like bored waiting for the bus. "Cellphone's Dead" could end a lot sooner than it does. Where's the damn bus already?+Tracks 4-6+: Ok here we go, the bus arrives with ""Strange Apparition":http://www.fluxblog.net/beck_strangeapparition.mp3". It's a bit more downtempo than the first 3 tracks, with the piano and Beck's vocal line adding some color and emotion. "Nausea" is pretty good too - it's the Beck I'm used to.+Tracks 7-9+: The bus takes a detour during ""New Round":http://www.ezarchive.com/getdown/AlbumSpace/8CXFB6MDIM/07+-+Beck+-+New+Round.mp3". The music is a transmission from space, and Beck is waving a sad goodbye to the aliens (although I can't confirm this). I'll miss them too, though. I'm lost on "Dark Star" and "We Dance Alone".+Tracks 10-12+: Only Beck could get away with a track like "1000BPM".+Tracks 13-15+: The aliens return to provide us with "The Information". All they will tell us though, is that they'll return in the spaceship someday. I'll be sure to tell the rest of the cult. But first, let's chill out to "Movie Theme". Finally, just when I thought the bus had reached my stop, we get the 10+minute long "The Horrible Fanfare/Landslide Exoskeleton", and all I can say is--be afraid. Open the window and jump out before it's too late.............................................................................................................................*Gogol Bordello* - ??Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike?? (recommended by SWozniak)-ehhh- -whelming- -worth a few spins- You gotta hear this! -buy this now!-"Charming" is not a word I'd imagine myself using to describe a punk-ska-cabaret record, but it fits Gogol Bordello's ??Gypsy Punks?? perfectly. I don't see how this band isn't more popular. Maybe they are and I'm just out of the loop, which would make sense considering that anything with the "ska" tag has me running away screaming. This is not music to ponder, you'll love it or hate it ( I'd almost guarantee you'll love it). I was instantly sucked in by the psycho violins, accordian, and the incredibly energetic vocals. This is how I'd imagine my crazy Russian uncle would sing, if I actually had a crazy Russian uncle. With such a bizarre combination of styles, it's hard to explain ??Gypsy Punks?? in words. The only record I can compare it to is Man Man's ??Six Demon Bag??. OK, I'll quit trying and let you hear for yourself: "Start Wearing Purple":http://audio.sxsw.com/2006/mp3/Gogol_Bordello-Start_Wearing_Purple.mp3"Dogs Were Barking":http://www.ezarchive.com/abramson/AlbumSpace/7ECDXDQGAU/Gogol+Bordello+-+Dogs+Were+Barking.mp3"Never A Crime":http://www.ezarchive.com/slvrdurango/AlbumSpace/28T954M3H/03+Not+A+Crime.mp3(direct links, thx to "i guess i'm floating":http://iguessimfloating.blogspot.com/2006/10/thanksgiving-germany-and-oj-oh-my.html, "sound of the suburbs":http://soundofthesuburb.blogspot.com/2006/09/old-new-and-borrowed.html, and "the torture garden":http://soundofthesuburb.blogspot.com/2006/09/old-new-and-borrowed.html, please don't sue me)My iTunes lists ??Gypsy Punks?? as "Obscuro" in the genre category. 'Nuff said.............................................................................................................................*Neverending Bright Lights* - ??Goodbye Friends of the Heavenly Bodies?? (recommended by democlez)I don't feel right even trying to review this one. It's begging me for a spin via headphones, and I have none. So instead of a review I'd like to direct you to "demonclez's":http://mog.com/democlez "great post":http://mog.com/democlez/blog_post/9856 about it. In the meantime, I'll be playing ??Goodbye Friends?? as I fall asleep on a nightly basis.............................................................................................................................I'd like to give *special shout-out's* to Viva La Britt, SatisfiedMind614, LambCurry666, SamTheButcher, Manos, and Yah-Shua for your recommendations, although there are several I've yet to hear. This has been a lot of fun.*Next Up:*Download binge highlights: Songs worth your time.

  3. Geoff78 says Gogol bodello, gypsy punks is both one of the strangest and most enjoyable albums I've heard in a longtime, such attitide and viggour on a violin and accordian i've never heard before Go Revolutions being the stand out track for me, and having seen footage of them on Jools holland over here in the uk, really looking forwards to seeing them in brixton on 4th november

  5. gollygee says Thanks for the breakdown on the Beck album, it is as I feared, not that good. But I will probably buy it anyway, just for nostalgia's sake. :)

  6. tybees says gollygee: I really like some of the tracks, but as a whole it's a bit too out there for my taste. If you like Beck you should get it, that was just my impression.

  7. SWozniak says Woooohooooooo! Dogs were barking (dun dun) monkeys clapping (dun dun)!

  8. democlez says Neverending White Lights is definitely good played on headphones or really loud while you're relaxing alone in a dark room. I hope you're enjoying it as much as I am, and I look forward to hearing what tracks you like the most!

  9. tybees says Democlez: my crappy computer speakers aren't giving the album any justice, and they don't get very loud. I like it a lot, it's one of my top ten of the month according to the mog-o-matic, but I just had no words for a "first impression" review. Each song deserves more than one listen. The guy took 4 years to make it? Well then it deserves more than a casual spin. I agree that "Grace" is excellent. An instant favorite track is "The Longing".

  11. gollygee says I'm going to buy it. The sick thing is that the album art sealed the deal for me. Anything involving stickers is A okay in my book. :D
