Transmission 2008 Defines New Music Ecosystem in Vancouver (and Whistler)
The 3rd annual international music and digital technology conference introduces bold new programming and more venues

When the 3rd annual transmission international music conference and showcase convenes December 3 to 7, 2008, returning delegates will notice a few changes affecting the overall conference format, venues and location.

"We’re evolving," admits Co-Founder and Producer Tyl van Toorn. "We’re still committed to providing an intimate, boutique environment but we also want to ensure that the dialogue considers a greater number of viewpoints, incorporating all sectors of the music community and beyond."

To this end, organizers have engaged the perspectives of three new programme chairs representing three key pillars of the music ecology: the recorded music sector, the live business and, most importantly, the vital role of the artist.

Transmission has also introduced the role of General Facilitator to frame the topics, focus the debate and guide the delegation to outcomes. University professor, composer and entrepreneur, Paul Hoffert, will work with the Programming Chairs to develop the topics streams. He’ll also facilitate discussions to ensure transmission remains a place where all delegates can engage in a free exchange of ideas.

As in previous years, roundtable discussions will remain a key component of transmission’s programming. These discussions will be enhanced by a series of keynote presentations exploring some of the most critical social and economic challenges facing the industry today.

The popular showcase format is also undergoing some changes. This year, export-ready artists will have a chance to perform for delegates and music fans in various venues. "It’s exciting," says co-founder Brad Josling. "Delegates are going to experience a greater diversity of talented artists than ever before in some of Vancouver’s best live venues. We will be doing some very focused sets for specific tastes while experimenting in more genres."

In what may be the biggest move of the year, transmission is adding a new program in Whistler, BC. Working in partnership with the Whistler Film Festival, transmission is presenting The Whistler Film Festival’s Music Cafe, a music showcase for the film business. transmission will also be co-presenting the Whistler Summit, a change-agent roundtable featuring a unique conversation amongst keynote speakers presenting at both festivals.

Showcases in Vancouver will be held at Storyeum and Biltmore Cabaret. Whistler TBA. More details will be posted soon.

It's hard to believe that transmission is now entering it's third year. An international, invitation-only event, transmission emphasizes the importance of connecting artists to audiences, particularly through ever-evolving digital platforms. For more information go to www.transmitnow.com
