Question:

What type of bear is best?

Black bear... or...

...Minus the Bear?
You decide.

BILL!

My parents introduced me to a lot of the music I listen to. I grew up thinking that Rock On by David Essex was, like, the coolest song evar because my mom had it on a mix CD that we would listen to in the car. That, and Come On Eileen by Dexy's Midnight Runners, All the Young Dudes by Mott the Hoople and many others became staple songs of my childhood (and yes, looking back, it was probably really hilarious to my parents when my cousins, sisters and I would sing along to Come On Eileen as little kids, having no idea what we were saying). My mom also had what she called girl mixes, with music by the Fifth Dimension, Nancy Sinatra, and Leslie Gore, among others.

I still listen to these songs.

What if I had parents who were into, I don't know, death metal (cause, really, that's the only non-recent genre I can think of that I don't really like)? Would I like death metal? Is there a part of me who could have really been into it, had it been introduced to it in my early years?

The world may never know.

...any music recommendations, sans death metal? =)

Sooo I just went on a downloading spree and got a bunch of tunes that I hadn't heard in forever.

Man, I missed Weezer. And Ben Folds. And Bush. And Silverchair.

Lesson learned: New computer does not need to equal new music.

Though I am vaguely frightened I have gone over my bandwidth limit... humm. I suppose I shall find out soon.

Any recommendations? Please. I'm begging you. I miss music.

hurrah for making new friends with good taste in music.
if you like being happy, please check out The Apples In Stereo or Cake.
if you like being mellow, give Camera Obscura or David Gray a listen.
if you like being sad, try Elliott Smith, or specifically, Ocean by Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos.
if you want to be awesome, listen to Journey.

...just kidding.

I am back. and quite excited about this fact.

I was just in Florida for the Outback Bowl with my marching band, and it was a good time. we got to hear/see Tennessee's band, plus about a dozen (literally) high school bands. it was a good time - though, I still think our band kicked their bottoms. we're pretty much amazing. (I may be slightly biased).

at any rate, much fun was had. but I missed MOG dearly. you know that old saying 'absence makes the heart grow fonder'? totally applies, for the first time in my life.

I can't explain how much I love Minus the Bear.
it's.... his voice. the lyrics. the way the music is played - you can tell if it's Minus the Bear as soon as you hear the opening of any of their songs. and it's a good thing. it's not that their songs sound alike... they just have this amazing uniting sound that is so uniquely them.
I had been listening to Minus the Bear for a while - not a lot of it, mind, but I liked what I heard. my good friend Jeana then proposed that we go see them when they came to the TLA in Philly. I agreed, naturally, and we went.
that concert... changed my life. it was amazing. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to see them, and I can't wait until I can do it again. of course, they're in Europe right now... but they're coming home soon!
this is going to sound terrible, but I had never seen the band, I'd just heard them. I was not expecting Jake Snider to be so attractive physically - it still doesn't seem fair to me that he was blessed with an amazing voice and good looks (in my opinion, anyway).
it was.... overwhelming, would be a good word.
ahhhh... that night.
I wish I could keep it forever.

"ABSINTHE!"
"...patience."

"I think I loved you, but I forget the place."

bored mogging ahead.

love - 46 tracks. favorite: Forever Lost by Cloverleaf, beacause it took me forever to find out why it showed up.

hate - 2 tracks. favorite: Hateful by the Clash, because I like it better than Hate to Say I Told You So.

hm...

had this conversation with my friend recently. beware of chatterbox lag. I'm burns.

burns: do you ever feel... soulful when you're listening to something
burns: ?
burns: or empty, or hopeful...
liz: Floggin Molly is always good. . .and hmm somethign you's like Postal Service. . or Death Cab
liz: I feel lots of things when I listen to music
liz: Somebody to love
burns: I mean... like when I listen to Cathedrals by Jump Little Children, I feel like... like it's all building up to something
liz: that song always makes me feel sad and yet somehow good at the same time
burns: I can't describe it
liz: you don't like the songs that make me feel deeply though
liz: I really like JAson Mraz
liz: and his songs, but you're not a fan
burns: oh! or when I listen to postcard from italy by beirut (which you HAVE to listen to), I feel like friggin dancing
burns: like that's all that I would have to do ever
burns: yeah...
burns: I just wanted to see how different we were
liz: see I feel like dancing most, and almost ashamed to admit this
liz: when I hear celtic music
liz: or at least floggin molly
liz: I feel ike I could just dance forever. . .it makes me feel good all over and I just want to come alive
liz: does that sound weird?
burns: no, of course not. that's how I feel when I listen to beirut
burns: we're just different
burns: have you ever listened to elliott smith?
liz: yeah but that's how firends are supposed to be
liz: I've hear of him
liz: but I haven't listened no
burns: well, yeah, everyone's different
burns: I'm not critcising either of us
burns: we're just different
liz: I didn't say you were. . .I'm just saying we couldn't possibly agree on everything
burns: I agree
liz: we'd go mad
burns: it's true.

...I don't know what to do with myself. tra la la.

my little sister entered her school's talent show with three of her friends.

the result:

have you ever?

have you ever been on a MOG-induced downloading spree so bad that when you put your iTunes on random, you don't recognize a lot of what plays?

that's me, just now.

and I love most of what I hear.

however, occasionally when a song comes on, I just think - what the hell is this and what is it doing in my collection? so I look... and then I know my indie cred is nonexistant, because without fail, the artist of the song in question is always Pavement.

...though I am glad I did download them, because otherwise I wouldn't have heard Echo and the Bunnymen.

could someone please help me figure out an appropriate description for this song?
I... I don't even know if I like it or not.
this is the first time I've ever been confused about a song in this way.

...at any rate. I love the suggestions I've been getting from our beloved MOGOS... there is so much music to like. my favorites thus far are:

Jump, Little Children (thanks Brett) - listen to Cathedrals or 15 Stories
Beirut (I'm not sure who suggested this, but it's amazing) - Postcards from Italy
Margot and the Nuclear So and So's (thanks Mr. Gary) - Ocean
Maritime (again, I forget... but thanks) - Tearing Up the Oxygen
Mew (thanks Don Incognito... teehee) - The Zookeeper's Boy

and now I feel like I should give back. so...

Amy Ray - Put it Out For Good ...this chick rocks.
The Apples in Stereo - Tidal Wave, or anything really. they're so fun.
Emiliana Torrini - To Be Free. super mellow.
Gene Pitney - Mecca, or 24 Hours From Tulsa, or anything, again... I love him.
The Gloria Record - Immovable Motorist. also mellow. I like mellow.

...and...

MINUS THE BEAR - ANYTHING EVER BECAUSE THEY'RE AMAZING.

...sorry, I don't know where that came from.

late night mogging. how fun.

ohkay.
I'm quite tired. and I can't sleep.
I don't have insomnia,
I have a terrible roommate.
woe is me.

so there was this article I read once. it was in a free magazine, and it was about the way no one walks in silence anymore - that everyone listens to music.
the article was negative. their angle = no one appreciates silence.

oh-so many things to say.

first of all, forgive me if I can't stand to listen to one side of yet ANOTHER ridiculous conversation between some sorority girl and her bffl. when my iPod broke, and I was sans music for over a week, I very nearly murdered more than one bimbo bragging to her friend about what a slut she was last night.

also, I wished to chop the feet off of those who don't know how to walk properly and insist on shuffling along. ugg boots dragging along the ground are enough to drive a sane person to insanity, and quickly.

next - music is a motivator for me. if I have to get somewhere quickly, putting on upbeat music helps me get there faster. if I want to just appreciate nature, something slower lets me take it all in.

and what's wrong with not liking silence? I personally don't mind it, but it can be unnerving at times - especially in our library stacks. it's a little more than creepy.

...there are other things I could say, but I am much too sleepy. perhaps I will get lucky and just pass out as soon as my head hits the pillow.

heh. right.

I'll end with this - if I wanted to walk in silence, I would have to wear earplugs.

facts:

if I were any more attracted to Jake Snider, I think my internal organs would combust.

I love movies a lot (any suggestions?)

Cathedrals and 15 Stories by Jump, Little Children are amazing and you should listen to them.

I'm going to a play tonight, and the next night, and a House marathon followed by an improv show on Sunday. good weekend.

I love Ctrl+Alt+Del.

I need to remember to write about that ridiculous article in that magazine on here sometime.

my roommate and her obnoxious friends are driving me insane.

...

where is the LID?

so I don't know if any of you are familiar with Hugh Laurie, or like his work, but my friends and I saw this clip and can't stop asking each other where the lid is.

turns out Hugh did quite a few things before House (who would have guessed?), and A Bit Of Fry and Laurie was one of them. the other chap, stephen fry, was in V for Vendetta if you've seen that. good stuff indeed.

...if you're into that sort of thing, that is.

and so I'm trying really hard to convince myself to go take a walk or something, as I have nothing to do for the rest of the day.

but most likely, I'm going to end up watching something like Mannequin, Queer as Folk, or Wayne's World and eating that entire pint of Chubby Hubby I just bought.

so, I'm back at college, where we have established that there is no radio (but thanks to those who made suggestions, I am in the process of checking these things out). I'm all right with this, though, as I had my classic rock fix at home. six hours round trip plus a lot of running around equals good radio time.

speaking of which, one of my local stations, dubbed 'Frank', had a countdown of the best five hundred classic rock songs, as voted on by listeners. what can I say, except that people that live near me are weird. I'm not sure as to what the top five were, as I was leaving home when they were playing and the station went static, but the song 'Life's Been Good' by Joe Walsh was definitely in the top ten. suffice it to say I'm not a fan.

at any rate. I'm back. I've missed my computer, which has all of the fun new music that I've found thanks in part to viewers like you. going on at home is pretty much pointless - as Ethan from CAD would say, "fucking dial-up!"

http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php?d=20021104

one of my roommates was listening to music on her computer the other day. this song came on - and I recognized it, but I only knew the first verse. curious, yes? and so I ask her what it is and who it's by, and look it up...

...and it's the theme song to the Adventures of Pete and Pete. I like it. it's worth a listen, I think. plus, there's an interesting little story surrounding it, if you're into it. Pete and Pete actually featured some other fun nineties music also.

so there that is.

Concerning Selling Out.

first of all, I must say that this post was inspired by lemontwist's featured one. I thought she was going somewhere completely different with it when I read the intro - don't get me wrong, I wasn't disappointed, but this particular topic is something that drives me up walls. yes, multiple walls. and I don't particularly like driving up them, because gravity is a bitch and I fall down and go splat.

in any case! I love supporting the bands/comedians/movies/whatever that I love. if I like something, if it has changed me in some small way, I believe that that something deserves to be recognized by others, to get the opportunity to change someone else's life.

when Jimmy Eat World reached the level of success they have now, I was ecstatic. here was a band that taught me so much, that had opened my eyes and ears, that (in part) made me who I am today, and they were doing very well for themselves. and why not? they deserve it. they still produce amazing music. at their concerts, they play the old and the new. they covered Heatmiser on their newest release! can I still feel the butterflies? hell yes, and thank you.

to me, bands only 'sell out' when they completely change their sound to suit the tastes of the masses to make more money. sacrificing musical integrity is unforgivable... not that any band that does that would want to be forgiven. you know, too busy doing backflips into swimming pools of money, etc.

some things that I've accepted.

I have accepted and embraced the fact that I have shitty taste in music and movies.
I think that somehow I can live with this. at least I'm not a snob. music/movie snobs make little pieces of my soul die slowly and painfully.
and don't you just hate it when bits of your soul die?

I have also accepted the fact that I can't sing for beans. or anyone/thing else, for that matter. it doesn't keep me from singing, though. also, I tell terrible jokes in attempts to seem cool and/or hip. it doesn't work... and I tell them anyway.

so I'm pretty much lame. and perfectly content with that.

according to my mog-o-meter, I am smoking. and you know what they say; when there's smoke, there is the inherent need to listen to electronic german music.

also, there is the need to study for french tests. I leave you with the humor of Demetri Martin:
