I finally have it! The double CD deluxe edition of Marillion's latest release. I've been a fan ever since I heard "Script for a Jester's Tear". The lead singer, Fish, has since departed and the music's taken a different turn but it's every bit as engaging as ever.
Marillion had always been grouped into a category of Genesis wannabes due to their prog-rock roots and the the similarities between Peter Gabriel's voice and that of Fish. As if that's a bad thing... But since Fish left to go solo, the band's been tightening and refining their sound to make it uniquely their own.
Their second last release "Marbles" is one of my favourites. It too, was released in a deluxe 2cd edition and I can't tell you how many times I listened to it at work, at the gym, on an airplane... It's a great mix of rock, progressive rock and terrific ballads. I don't know why this band isn't more popular.

I've been so self-absorbed lately, and a bit down, that when I read your title, I thought you were speaking directly to me. Sheesh! I need a vacation, and this cut - is definitely the beginning of said mental vacation.
I hear the similiarities that you mention, and also whole heartedly agree (and am relieved) that these guys are actually finding their own sound. Prog-rock for Prog-rock's sake is, well, brutal.
Cheers,
Van
