Artists You Should Know About

I just finished the last of the turkey the night before last.  Thanksgiving Day for us was last week.  There were three of us on Sunday, sharing one 10.5 pound turkey and all the trimmings.  I even made pumpkin cheesecake.

I love this time of year. The days are sunny and mostly warm with a beautifully filtered sunlight.  It makes the fall colours almost shimmer in a hazy glow.

On Monday the holiday itself, we met some friends and as is our tradition, took the ferry over to the harbour islands and passed the afternoon walking along the boardwalk and through the parklands.  I have to say I was surprised to see so many people on the beach in Toronto (in October) and nude at that!  Yes, the nude beach was still active on Thanksgiving Day and no, I did not join in.

For me, the summer's truly over and I am enjoying autumn.  Here's this month's soundtrack, a perfect little pop masterpiece by the Pet Shop Boys. Interesting bit of trivia - Johnny Marr plays guitar on the track.

Enjoy your autumn!

I'm eating chocolate and drinking a beer, trying to savour the last of a beautiful September Day.  It was sunny and warm with a light breeze; one of those days where you think "Why can't every day be like this?"

I started the day with a walk to our annual book festival "Word on the Street" and I was amazed by how many people were in attendance.  The event took up several blocks and closed off Queen's Park Crescent from Wellesley Street right up to Bloor Street.

On my way back home, I stopped and watched a few of the finishers in the Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon.  A perfect day for running; sunny but no humidity.  Again, several streets were blocked off for the day.  We seem to do that a lot here.

Then we thought why not take advantage of what could be the last nice Sunday this year and we went for brunch on a sunny patio.

Now I'm watching the sky turn pink and I'm enjoying my memories of the day.  This is the perfect soundtrack, a song that requires at least one listen every September.

This version is by Lotte Lenya, once married to it's composer Kurt Weill. She was a Tony award-winning, Oscar nominated actress who is probably best remembered, rightly or wrongly, as Rosa Klebb in the in the James Bond film "From Russia to Love".  Her character was famous for her shoes, with knives sticking out of them.

I wonder what memories October will bring?

What a lovely post! Had a similar weather day in these parts, though did not venture too far from home. Love that pic, but why do I feel like you are trying to sell me a car?? I know this song, but by somebody else...did Bryan Ferry cover this....started to answer this question when I read your post early this morning, and my mouse went all click-crazy!! Anyway, thanks for the vibe T!

Thanks Scot.  It's been covered by plenty of people most famously I guess by Frank Sinatra.

As for the photo, that's fall in Tinytown - should've zoomed in on the trees, I guess.  Anyway, it's bloody cold here today.  Glad I enjoyed the weather while I could...

Toronto on a warm, sunny, relatively smogless day, can always make me feel really great. This post reminded me of this. Only 9 or so months until summer!

Here's an interesting artist.  He was playing bass with the big boys at 13 and later spent years touring with Miles Davis.

After, he toured with such soul stars as Stevie Wonder and Eureka Franklin.

In 1976 he signed to Buddha records and started a successful solo career.  The Norman Connors song "You Are My Starship" was written by him, as well as this hit from 1978.

Perfect soul music for the night-time.  Friday night...
