Courtney Love's Tenuous Ties to Judaism Don't Mean She Won't Drop J-Bombs

Artist:
(Jan. 16) -- Note to Courtney Love: When you're being interviewed by a magazine called Heeb, you might want to put phrases like "Jew loan officers" and "Jew private banks" on the no-fly list. Mere moments after explaining how she came to self-identify as a "Jewban" (part-Jew, part-Cuban), Love let the uncomfortably anti-Semitic language fly.
Her ties to Judaism are tenuous, at best - as she explains to Heeb, "I'm a Buddhist, but I do identify with Judaism in the sense that it's in my bloodline. Yeah, I mean, my mother's mother - my mother was adopted, and her real mother is a woman named Paula Fox." She goes on to say that her relationship with Fox, a renowned Jewish novelist, includes just one contentious meeting - Love, for some reason, mentions the meeting took place on Passover.
"I think [Paula Fox is] a frosty-a-- b----, and she said in The New York Times Magazine that she didn't like the way I used language. I'm a lyricist. Call it whatever the f--- you want, but don't talk about how I use language because how I use language is my bread and butter.... You know what, Paula, go f--- yourself."
While you might think a single meeting with a loathed biological grandmother isn't enough to warrant the kind of "one of us" attitude that might give a free pass to Love, she's not worrying about it. Asked about her Golden Globe nomination - and apropos of absolutely nothing - Love confides, "Every time you buy a Nirvana record, part of that money is not going to Kurt's child, or to me, it's going to a handful of Jew loan officers, Jew private banks, it's going to lawyers who are also bankers, it's going to sixty PAs."
The rest of the interview, certainly worth a read, is a strange stream-of-consciousness from Love, including anecdotes about collecting DNA from the bathroom of her famous (unnamed) biological grandfather, the TV she watched during rehab, and how she got famous.
The most fascinating moment of the piece comes when the Heeb reporter asks about Love's daughter, Frances Bean Cobain. "You know, I'm not like 'cool mom.' I'm a mother. I'm not like, 'Oh, honey, if you're going to do that, do it at home.' I'm more like, 'You're not going to do that, so, f--- off, or I'm taking your computer, and your f---ing, you know, Blackberry.' But, I'm a really, really good mother, and the proof is in the pudding."

Thanks. Courtney is still unpredictable -- her myspace blog is a hoot. She's paranoid about people ripping her off, money in general, and you should see what she says about Ryan Adams! I think she's one of the reasons he's going to run away and hide after his current tour is over.
That said, Live Through This and Celebrity Skin are a couple of my favorites from the 90s -- and the new stuff she has on myspace is promising for the next album. She promises it will be better than America's Sweetheart.
