I watched this documentary on the pixies last night -- it was one of the best documentaries I had seen in a long while. It had soem amazing, spot-on perfromances (fullength songs!). It was also one of the saddest docs. I had ever seen. The band rarely spoke with one another, no smiles, all hand wringing and dishcord. Each member would open up to the camera, and then shut down when others were around. The only remotely hapy member was Joey Santiago -- but he was missing the first year of his son's life -- which in itself was sad.
One of the weirder scenes was Frank Black in his bus bunk, wearing a walkman, and chanting mantras -- "people like me... I'm talented... I'm cute."
Very weird. Anyone else see this?

Yes, agreed, loudQUIETloud was indeed very sad. The title was a double entendre -- it referred to both the dynamics of their music (and the bands they inspired, like Nirvana) and it also referred to the film itself -- loud and noisy onstage scenes followed by mostly quiet to silent backstage and otherwise off-stage scenes, then back to loud performance footage.
There is a terrific older Pixies documentary called Gouge that contains footage of a 1988 show they did in London. The documentary is pretty much more of the same, if a bit less morose, but a must-see for any fan of the band. It contains interviews with journalists who covered them and bands who were influenced by them at the time (including of all people U2 and David Bowie). The London show is worth watching in it's entirety -- a perfect snapshot of the band playing an amazing, poweful set before a crowd of rabid fans.

I loved the Pixies (still do, their music).
loudQUIETloud: a film about the Pixies
"...the film gets into the personal sides of the performers. The directors' verite, fly-on-the-wall approach steals many potent, revealing moments."
- Combustible Celluloid
"Pic looks splendid, the sound is first-rate and numerous cameras provide a prowling appraisal of the band."
- Variety Magazine
"The concert sequences are excellent, potently shot and recorded. The coiled power of The Pixies' songs comes through well."
- HeraldNet.com
Too bad they're so miserable around each other. And didn't Kim once sing "I just want to get along"?

I have not seen this, but it sounds incredibly interesting

This was an amazing documentary. So many good moments. The one that sticks out is The Pixies in the back of the bus talking about being zombies in a movie instead of releasing a comenack album. That would be awesome.
I really love the interactions between the members. On the opening night, when Deal hurts her finger. Frank looks up and caringly says "Oh kimmie."
If y're a Pixies fan, you must watch this movie.
