MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Artist:
Album:

You know how sometimes bands that have a truly great album sometimes have an album that precedes the great album, and it's almost great, showing it's potential, but for some reason it's just not as great as the great one?

Example? How about The Bends as a predecessor to OK Computer?

How about Mellow Gold to Odelay?

Each of the preceding records were good, in fact, really good, but then they loose all comparison because of what followed.

Do you guys have others?

cat power did that. everyone loved that covers album she did, then she put out "the greatest" and it was amazing. chemical brothers did it with "dig you own hole" and then "surrender." same with interpol: "Turn on the Bright Lights" came out in 2002 and was good, but then they released "Antics" in 2004 and that was awesome! p.s. i like "the bends" and more than "ok computer"

fair enough, this is obviously a case of taste. btw, I'd agree with you on Cat Power, except that I think the covers record preceded You Are Free which I think is a great record, whereas I think The Greatest which followed You Are Free, which instead of being a great record, was merely a great sounding record.

Anyway, again, it's all about personal taste. Thanks for adding more fodder to my theory!

Yeah, there are lots of those situations: Talk Talk's "It's My Life" before "Colour of Spring," Soundgarden's "Badmotorfinger" (which is pretty damn good) before "Superunknown" (which is phenomenal), Sigur Ros's "Ágætis Byrjun" before "( )," Imogen Heap's work on Frou Frou's "Details" before her second solo disc, "Speak For Yourself," and my favorite example: Joss Stone's "The Soul Sessions" and "Mind, Body and Soul" both pale in comparison to "Introducing Joss Stone." I guess it's much better to have a newer record outshine an earlier one... it's a lot worse in the other direction... that's a longer list :)
