In honor of Helloween, I dub these my "terrifying" ten (no particular order):1. "The Plauge Mass", Diamanda Galas2. "Dead In A Boat", Wolf Eyes3. "Tainted Love", Coil (especially with the video they released)4. "She is in Fear of Death", Today is the Day5. "Jesse", Scott Walker6. "Lay Screaming", Scratch Acid7. "Lux Aeterna", Gyorgy Ligeti 8. "Strange Fruit", Billie Holiday (and deeply sad as well.)9. "O Death", Dock Boggs10. "Hex", Bark PsychosisAnyone else got some suggestions?

  1. Dale says Nice list, although I don't think I would have found Coil's cover of "Tainted Love" scary without having seen the video. Brrr.

  2. tiwon says True enough, that video gives me the chills. I guess it just always plays in my head when I hear the track. I'll sub in any track off of GOD's Possession album. Or maybe some early Hafler Trio.

  4. wassonii says I'd add, too, the unreleased hellraiser themes from coil, only because it actually scares me sometimes, but a list to be reckoned with, for sure. The image, and forgive my ignorance, is it durer?

  5. tiwon says Oh yeah (!) that soundtrack is the ultimate in creepy vibes...and I totally forgot about it (I don't have it - out of sight out of mind, I guess) The engraving is from Thomas Carey's translation of Puget de la Serre's "The Mirrour Which Flatters Not", pub'd 1639.
