This song is truly a classic. It's a song that really gives you a feel of what it was probably like being a (then) 35 year old 4th grade school teacher, with different ambitions (like rocking out). I know Mr. Pollard was heavily criticized for leaving teaching for this more "unsteady" career. People in Dayton, Ohio just are not supposed to do that kind of thing. I also like how the video shows what life in Dayon must be like (hanging around outside, drinking beer)

I am a scientist - I seek to understand me
All of my impurities and evils yet unknown
I am a journalist - I write to you to show you
I am an incurable
And nothing else behaves like me

And I know whats right
But Im losing sight
Of the clues for which I search and choose
To abuse
To just unlock my mind
Yeah, and just unlock my mind

I am a pharmacist
Prescriptions I will fill you
Potions, pills and medicines
To ease your painful lives
I am a lost soul
I shoot myself with rock & roll
The hole I dig is bottomless
But nothing else can set me free

And I know whats right
But Im losing sight
Of the clues for which I search and choose
To abuse
To just unlock my mind
Yeah, and just unlock my mind

I am a scientist - I seek to understand me
I am an incurable and nothing else behaves like me

Everything is right
Everything works out right
Everything fades from sight
Because thats alright with me - Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices)

Seriously. I've been listening to GBV ever since I saw that a few hours ago (instead of looking at nekkid girls).

funny, i read the article and watched the video of gbv on suicide girls just minutes before you made your post. gbv is rad. i can't believe how young pollard looks in that video. he probably wasn't even that young.

I got to thinking about this, as experiencing a breakup myself this week. What are some of your favorite break-up songs? After my first break-up I listened to a lot of Sebadoh (late 90s). The next time it happened, Beck's Sea Change did the job well (late 2002). And then when the previous break-up before the current one happened, I found myself listening to the Scud Mountain Boys' "Grudge **" a lot (late 2003).

Now that I think of it, Matthew Sweet's "Nothing Lasts" is another good one.

Agreed...Beck's "Sea Change" is THE quintessential break up album!
