Point 1. Obviously, the production of a music video is expensive. $500,000 easy.
Point 2. Everyone is making videos these days. My grandma has a YouTube account.
It's easy to understand why everyone from Velvet Revolver to Modest Mouse are hosting these make-our-video (at no cost to us) contests. But they've always turned out as slideshows and/or really bad short films. Until now.
Adam Duritz posted on his blog the other day that all visitors to the site will now have the ability "to get raw footage of the band recording and playing the songs live" for another one of these contests. Pretty cool idea.
The first round of home-recordings: "We're going to try and give you different stuff every week or two for a while or until we run out of things we're actually "allowed" to give you but it all starts right here with 4 different feeds of studio footage from "1492". Here's what you get:
1) Me 2) Immy tearing his guitar to shreds 3) Immy (he was pretty annoyingly everywhere on this song) pummeling his bass into pulp 4) Jim beating the living crap out of his drum kit.
You can get your supplies to get started here.
I've been so busy the past few days that I haven't even had time to listen to the new Mars Volta release. In my defense, I cannot listen to a new album partially; the first listen must include all tracks. Anyways, I had some reading to do so I decided to pop it in. Wow.
The album is chock full of the sweet electro-funk for which the Volta is famous. In fact, it's sort of a return to their original sound. The album pretty much rocks for a solid 2 and a half hours. We'll talk about the run time later. But there's definitely less down time in this album. It's very active, you know, like the kind of album you get really involved in.
It seems to me like a lot more went into the writing process this time. The layering and blending is very mature, and the sound is more focused than in Amputechture.
Something odd occurred to me by about the sixth track. I realized that the album was still playing. The official running time is 2:24, but I swear - and this is why I always give the first listen a full one - it felt like 3 or 4 hours went by.
I'm not going to argue with anyone who says The Mars Volta is "weird." If you're not into them, it's difficult to understand why anyone would be. But I would definitely recommend this album to anybody even remotely interested in prog rock.

by the sounds of the song you posted here it sounds like they have most definitely brought back more of their earlier sound. i was satisfied with "amputechture," but i just feel like it takes a lot of effort to listen to, and if i miss a slower moment i'm missing a critical part of the album. however, it was those moments that made the album less engaging, in that respect. maybe with this release being a runtime of 2 and a half hours, i'd be left kinda bored too? not if it was "active" enough like you say. sure hope so, this song is great!
I heard from a friend that the Adam and the Crows played last night on Fuse. I had to work! Did anybody get to see this? I'm curious about what they decided to play.

ahh so they are supplying better footage in hopes of a better, less youtube-like video. smart.
