Is Halloween a kick off to the holiday season? Or just a day who happens to come before Thanksgiving?

Halloween is its own sacrament. It don't need no other stinkin' holidays to lean on....

God, i worked as a DJ last night at a halloween party where the host an' hostess were dressed as Adam + Eve BEFORE THE FALL!!!!! Yep, not even a fig leaf!! An' these folks are in their 40's!!! The rest of the small crowd were all dressed in somewhat risque costumes. By the end of the night there was a lot of hanky-panky goin' on!!!!! I swear i didn't know what kinda party it was goin' t'be!!!!!!! PS.........i kept most of my clothes on!!!!!!!!!!!

With the mid-term elections less than two weeks away I feel...nervous/excited/anxious/determined/all of the above.

I remember in 2004, Ted Leo's _Shake the Sheets_ had just come out. I drove to my polling station blaring _Little Dawn_. We were going to win back our government! Optimisim! Truth!

Fuck. We lost.

I still love _Little Dawn_. That song still makes me want to stab myself with a pen to feel something physically to go along with my emotional high. Ted Leo is a modern day prophet.

So, what song or songs, get your civic minds pumpin'?

Recently, anything by Rage Against the Machine,Spearhead,Frank Zappa or anything off the new Ministry album "Rio Grand Blood".

I remember after the 2004 election just being in a total raging tail spin.In utter disbelief thinking things like "You know,I've always liked Canada and Mexico is beautiful this time of year."

The Style Council's "Walls Come Tumbling Down"

I often put together cd's for political rallies - music thrown together in a pinch for civic psyching. These usually include the ol' standbys - Don't Stop by Fleetwood Mac and Beautiful Day from U2 - but sometimes I like to bust it out. Last weekend, we did a march in Austin and the CD had to be ~30 minutes long. Here's what it consisted of:

(What's so funny 'bout) Peace, Love and Understanding - Elvis Costello Respect - Aretha Franklin This Land is Your Land - Woody Guthrie We Shall Overcome - SNCC Freedom Singers 16 Military Wives - The Decemberists My Own Two Hands - Ben Harper Takin' It to the Streets - Doobie Brothers What's Goin' On - Marvin Gaye When the President Talks to God - Bright Eyes Peace Train - Cat Stevens

I wanted to end it with The Chemical Brothers' Galvanize, but I was overruled.

I happen to be partial to the magazine, Filter. Great artwork and articles. My girlfriend just recieved a subscription to Under the Radar. Jampacked with articles/reviews/overwhelming. My friend likes CMJ. Good review system.

I like me some Wire (not Wired, but Wire, or The Wire) and some www.stylusmagazine.com and some www.tinymixtapes.com ... I haven't read Under the Radar. Should find it.

The Big Takeover is the Bible of record reviews and has superb in-depth interviews. It's a magazine that's made with real passion. Too bad it only comes out twice a year, although typically at around 230 pages it takes a while to get through! Among the runners-up, Magnet is a bit more mainstream, but I find it much better than CMJ. I haven't read Filter enough to comment, though. I've been meaning to check out Under the Radar, maybe now I will.

Well, if we go online, there's much goodness to be found. I tend to like the record reviews at Cokemachine Glow, Delusions of Adequacy, and Drowned in Sound. I've also liked the reviews over at neumu, some of whose writers are active and pioneering moggers.
