since everyone is touting the greatness of this group, the hold steady, i decided to just get the new album without even sampling it. i downloaded it and burned a copy to drive around with because i had some chores to do and i haven't even got past the first two songs because i keep listening to them over and over.
"I love this girl/but i can't tell when she's having a good time" "how am i supposed to know if you're high if you won't even dance"
"she was a damn good dancer but she wasn't all that great of a girlfriend"
inspired greatness. i am happy.

My Trusted MOGs
I know...i was a late comer too...but so worth the wait! The man is a poet...I think 'chillout tent' is my song of the year!

i know i'm showing my demographic here, but one cool thing about 'boys & girls' is that it's one of those rare albums that says something to music fans on both sides of the generational divide...everyone i've recommended it to has flipped over it, including older dylan-springsteen fans who hardly ever respond to something new. i don't know if you'd call the hold steady rock classicists to any significant degree, but there's something genuinely exciting about a band with this kind of passion, ambition, and ability. definitely in my top 5 for '06.

Always happy to chime in with my excessive love for The Hold Steady. Get the first two records too, both excellent. Separation Sunday is one of the best records of the last decade. Phew....I am a broken record here....

emscee: when i first put the cd on and was listening to the first song i kept thinking this sounds really earlier springsteen like. i couldn't put my finger on it but its there.
from the brief stuff i read about the band it talked about them being from minneapolis and i could really hear that sound there too.
