WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

New Music....well new to me. Afrika Bambaataa

Posted over 2 years ago
as i mentioned in a previous post my son is listening to a lot of music and finding out his own likes and dislikes. The newest addition to the like side is Rage Against the Machine. The only cd i have by RATM is Renegades, their last record and it is record of covers. I told him it is a record of covers so he wanted to know who sang the originals. His favorite is Renegades of Funk and I went on napster and listened to Afrikka Bambaata's original and I asked myself, "Why don't I have any Afrikka Bambaata?" I need some. I remember the song he did with John Lydon, World Destruction under the moniker, Time Zone. According to Wikipedia he is often credited with being the first rapper. All i know is i need me some! This is why I feel so out of the loop when everyone has their top 10 albums of the year listed. I am still trying to catch up to stuff i missed in the 80's that will become one of my 'new' favorites.

  3. Cody B says Planet Rock- Afrika Bambaata and The Soul Sonic Force was the first 12" I ever bought. It is basically a cover of Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express (A damn good one, and super influential). Although revered in Hip Hop circles, only his early, early stuff is really Hip Hop. From Planet Rock on he was more electro and house, including stuff he has put out recently. World Destruction is kind of a red herring with him..not much else he did like that.

  4. thill says ever since i have discovered the beauty that is napster i give an album a listen or two. i listened to many cuts of the Looking For the Perfect Beat and loved it. it is a great way to give music a trial run.

  5. RobP says Does this album have his duet with James Brown? THAT is killer. (I know I have a best of with that on it, think it's this one).

  6. Jonh Ingham says Planet Rock by Soul Sonic Force is definitely the bomb. When it came out it sounded like absolutely nothing else being played in the clubs and discos. I once heard it in Danceteria with the driving music from Psycho played over it! If your son likes The Clash music influenced by hip hop he'll like Planet Rock. Make sure he plays it really loud. :-)
