BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Are there songs you like but parts of the songs you like more? Are there songs that you crank up at certain parts? Are there parts of a song that you rewind to to listen to again?

I was just driving home and Heroes by Bowie came on. I always crank the volume when it comes to the part, "I, I will be king and you, you will be queen." Basically from here on out i have the song cranked.

Another song i always do this for is, Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small-Town"--"I just want to scream Hello, my god it's been so long/ never dreamed you'd return." if i am listening to this on cd i rewind and listen to this part over and over.

For some reason I can't explain, I always find myself kicking up the volume on Stevie Wonder's version of We Can Work It Out when it comes to the bridge, ie the "Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting, my friend" bit.

Similarly, the guitar solo in Kid by The Pretenders.

now i have to go and play those songs and see if i feel the similar urge to crank it at those same parts.

If I could master the technology, I'd put the Pretenders guitar solo (all 10 seconds of it) on a loop and create a 35-minute instrumental. Well, maybe not.

Hey, Teresa, just thought of another corker.

There's a classic girl group track called When The Boy's Happy (The Girl's Happy Too) by The Four Pennies - actually The Chiffons under a different name.

It's essential to twist the button up to 10 for the hand-clappy bit in the middle with the lyric

"I know how to break him up I know how to make him care I know how to shake him up I just RUN MY FINGERS THROUGH HIS HAIR!"

Then there's a honkin' sax solo, complete with occasional feedback - or "rub", as I believe the professionals call it.

Probably one of my favourite pure "pop" songs. It's impossible to listen to it without smiling.

Ah... I do do this exact thing with some songs, but they escape me at the moment. One song I do remember though, is Konstantine by Something Corporate - but the only reason I crank it is cause the lyrics reference one of my favorite bands, Jimmy Eat World.

"It's to Jimmy Eat World/ and those nights in my car/ when the first star you see/ may not be a star/ I'm not your star/ isn't that what you said?/ what you thought the song meant?"

Funny you should mention this with Bowie. I've just had to write a piece on the period David Live to Station To Station for a Bowie special Mojo is putting out. On the remastered Young Americans, the second verse of "Right" is pure genius, a sudden left turn into Bowie-funk that makes no sense to the rest of the song and full of detail that only a coked-up madman would labour over. I bet George Clinton secretly wished he'd thought it up. I've been playing 'Right' constantly for 3 days and every time right on cue up goes the volume.

Isn't turning up the good bits something that makes listening to music great?
